Good strip. Much better than the last three.

Pretty good, but I've been wondering ever since Azure City fell:

Why the heck is Redcloak following Xykon around? Ever since they took the city, it's been Redcloak that's been doing most of the serious planning while Xykon just loafs around like an undead dork (though he's usually amusing with it). He's a lich! Shouldn't he be smarter than Redcloak (or at least act like it)?

However, Redcloak did slip up with that promise. I knew damn well Xykon would just fall back to another monster type.

Xykon's a sorcerer, not a wizard. Redcloak is a cleric. So Xykon's got Charisma as his primary stat, and Redcloak has Wisdom.

...which really explains a lot of their interactions.

Demiurge out.

"Start of Darkness" really answers this question in detail. If anything, it's the main point of the book.

However, among other (more interesting) reasons why Redcloak puts up with Xykon, the simplest explanation is that both an arcane and a divine epic-level spellcaster are needed to magically subvert the gates in the way they are intending. Thus, Xykon needs a divine caster and Redcloak needs an arcane caster, and without both, the Gates are useless to either one of them.
