I think you're seriously overthinking that one. Enjoy the wacky-d&d-rules joke for what it is.

I don't think he's overthinking it given that the early strips commented on 3.5 conversion. I think a lot of the cosmology was built around 3.5 and it was deliberate to allow metajokes ("It is not my fault the universal laws were re-written!")

I've just read the Start of Darkness so the last couple of strips have made a lot more sense to me than they would have otherwise. I really feel for Redcloak a lot more now. And whereas previously I though Xykon was hilariously evil, I now think of him as evil skum (but still hilarious despite that! ).
