I must have not been reading OotS during this particular part because it is not familiar and thus do not get the self-referential jokes.

Haley is the one who got them past that pair before. It was the typical one tells the truth and the other lies riddle. She shot one of them to get the correct answer, which is why the pair are acting that way. The magic of the valley makes people forget the exact specifics of their encounters there when they leave, so Haley doesn't remember.
