OPEN CALL-Writers

I just wanted to let everyone know that there is an OPEN CALL for short submissions located here:
http://www.genericuniverse.com/opencall.html

Basically, I am looking for 2-4,000 word descriptions of city locations. This includes shops, guild houses, etc. Please check the website for more information about the OPEN CALL and about Generic Universe Publishing. As it says at the webpage linked above, the pay is $.005 US per word. You must be 18 years old or older to participate in this Open Call.

Please email any questions you might have to submissions@genericuniverse.com with the subject “Open Call-Question” and your questions will be answered as quickly as possible (please allow a day or two for questions and a week for answers on submissions).

Thank you,
Patrick

I'd really cut the "pay is crap" bit.

If the pay is crap. I sort of expect that quality to carry over to other areas of the project. Art, editing, layout, advertising and other dollar figure areas.

You've got a clean and professional add going so it looks like there is some effort and professionalism behind the project. The bit about the pay is sort of funny, but I'd rather know exactly what you are paying so I could decide for myself. Without that exact number, I wouldn't consider signing up. I realize the payscale is listed on your website but that's a click and search away. It took me over a minute to find it and I'm supposed to lose interest in a website if it takes more than 14 seconds?

I hope it gets off the ground.

Okay, I took your suggestion and added the actual pay. Problem is that pay could be a bit variable for really long submissions. The pay in the entire RPG industry is crap, let's be completely honest here. I am trying to avoid paying a % of profits like most .pdf publishers for several reasons:
(1) avoid lengthy paperwork and acounting over the life of a product
(2) to guarantee the author some sort of pay (no matter how bad)
(3) to keep a consistent budget per product

My pay rates are based on numbers I have been given from publishers paying 25-30% of net profits to writers. If my numbers come out higher I will up the pay scale. Unfortunately, there is no way to do that now. It is true that a "hit" product would probably pay more if I went with a % of net profits but as I start out I need to focus on keeping a strict budget for each product.

I do appreciate the input.
Thanks,
Patrick

A few quick questions:

1) I have an idea for an area, but it's more of a street market over any one particular area. IE, it's an area PCs would visit, and it's done in detail, just not Super detail, since it's dealign with a larger area. Is that okay?
2) How do we do maps? I have no mapping software, and sending something by snailmail is kind of... annoying. I suppose I could scan something and send it. Is that do-able?

(1) Go ahead and email me with a few more details.

(2) A scanned, hand-drawn map is fine. I will be getting someone to do maps.

Speaking of (2) the person that was going to do some cartography and building drawings (exteriors) for me has just been informed he is going to Afghanistan in a few weeks. This pretty much means I need to find someone new that happens to be within my budget. If you know anyone interested please have them email me.

Thanks,
Patrick
