Open Content: Clarification

Re: Thanks!

Thanks for all the help! If I wasn't very clear, I just want to make a reference to the information, not to replicate it in our product.

Eg: Pyrus, Sorc 5/Blackmage(*) 3

In Footnote:
(*) - From The Book of Fiery Might (Gonzo Press), Pg 34

THG Hal>
Right now just the Caverner Prestige Class. It's for a book of non-Uber NPCs.

Thanks again. :)

DT
What is this about? An adventure? And the above is just the stat for an NPC? If that is the case, make sure the character stat is complete so consumer don't feel cheated like they HAVE to pick up the referenced product to get the info on that class.

Re: Re: Re: Open Content: Clarification

Uh asking for permission? Does one have to ask permission from the author of a book if one quotes a line of text from that book? If one puts a book title into the Bibliography does one have to ask permission as well? I quoted a line from Shakespeare in my WotC entry and I didn't ask for his permission... what if he doesn't approve of it being used in a gaming-related product?

It's not that there's an intetion of copying wholesale the whole PrC or item. He just means "details of this PrC can be found in this other product, not in this book. Look for it there. We're just using it because it's a good fit for what we have in mind."

My two coppers.

If you are using the OGL in your work and the d20 logo on your work, then you are under the terms of those licenses. In essence, you are giving up the right to fair use as it relates to Product Identity. YOu must follow the terms of the license.

Presuming you are making a product under the OGL/d20 STL, you cant use the "footnote method" without permission if the title of the book is PI since the license doesnt allow it. Yes, this supercedes general copyright principles.

I know it is a tedious task, but really, it doesn't hurt to ask the publisher of the source you want to use as reference. I mean they can only give you one of two answers: "permission granted" or "permission denied."

Not only can they give you "permission" but they can also help you cite things properly. Because remember they are the ones that can bitch about your use of their OGC. If you know they are ok with it and help you with its use then you also know they wont be griping about your use. Lets say you dont ask "permission" and you wind up accidently using PI or something. I think a publisher would be more likely to bust you on that than if you asked ahead of time.

Exactly. For example, in 4CTF, I discussed with both Dark Quest Games and OtherWorld Creations the use of IP in an appendix of the book. My use, actually, recommends that people go buy these books. Plus, of course, that appendix uses OGC from both.

I did ask AEG for the same, because I wanted to recommend use of Spycraft, but I got no answer. Used their OGC, though - but I made sure I asked first.

Thanks people for the clarifications!
