Opinion on attribute drain for spellcasting (my alt sorcerer)

  • If it suits the setting, Con drain is fine by me and I'd play it.

  • Regardless of context, its just too hrash for an adventuring character.

I'll skip the details for now. But in brief, sorcerers never use material components, instead using their own essence. I am developing a system where spells that require GP-value components will instead give temporary constitution drain. This type of system can be seen in CoC d20.

Anyways, my question is this. Assume without knowing the details that the reasons and context behind this ability drain makes perfect sense. That being said, is constitution drain still too harsh in practical terms?

(Note: This poll is not a replacement for playtesting. Just a preliminary phase.)

Con draining is very harsh, what's wrong with just HP drain? It's really hard to heal Con, compared to HP. Either way you'r making that taod familiar look much better.

My alt sorcerers don't get familiars. ;) But they do get d6. Keep in mind the con drain is only for gp-requiring spells. There aren't that many.

Level Spell Level Spell
5 Animate Dead 6 Permanent Image
6 Antimagic Field 6 Programmed Image
2 Arcane Lock 8 Protection from Spells
9 Astral Projection 9 Refuge
8 Binding 4 Scrying
6 Circle of Death 7 Simulacrum
8 Clone 4 Stoneskin
6 Contingency 8 Symbol
2 Continual Flame 8 Sympathy
7 Drawmij’s Instant Summons 9 Teleportation Circle
5 False Vision 9 Temporal Stasis
4 Fire Trap 3 Sepia Snake Sigil
7 Forcecage 1 Tenser’s Floating Disk
1 Identify 6 Tenser’s Transformation
3 Illusory Script 8 Trap the Soul
6 Legend Lore 6 True Seeing
2 Leomund’s Trap 7 Vision
2 Magic Mouth 5 Wall of Iron
3 Nondetection

Edit: these are just spell levels not con drain values. I haven't completed a forumla for con drain but it will tie into the gp value of the spell and the level of the spell, with certain maximums put into place.

I just bought book of eldritch might 2, specifically for Monte's variant sorcerer. I liked it but the permanent experience loss just doesn't sit well with me. I prefer temporary constitution drain because it better represents using one's body as a component rather than somehow forgetting the lessons learned in one's experiences. Especially when you consider it will only apply to about 30 spells and of those, few are ones that might be cast in the heat of battle.

Anyways just a valid comment instead of an annoying bump. But a bump nonetheless. :)

thanks!

I will post the class when I have the time to design the system. I'm currently working on my variant paladin.
