Opinions on gmail?

I'm not sure there's a reason. The logic is probably that, while logged in, google can track your search history and peg it to a specific account. I'm not sure they actually do that, though I suppose it's possible.

Not entirely sure why anyone gives a rats patoot, but they do. If I'm comfortable with letting Google handle my email, I've got no problem letting them know what I search.

OK, I've started using it and have discovered something interesting on the ad front:

If I use the POP feature, and view the mail in Thunderbird, I don't get any ads -- just the text email.

They don't make money directly, but it grows their userbase. That's great for marketing purposes. It also makes it all the more likely that you'll use your Google account to IM on Google Talk, use the google.com/ig personalized homepage, on Google Groups, Adsense, Adwords etc. Oh, and you'll probably login to gmail via the web when you're away from your computer.

On the 'why would anyone want to use POP'-thing. As someone who has various email-accounts, it allows me to use and manage all my email accounts from one application. It also means I have access to all my old email (well those I decided to keep) whenever I'm not connected to the internet.

I'm indifferent to gmail's interface. Plus, I can't see web-mail as anything more than throw-away or some way to retain my anonimity and deflect spam.

The only reason I use it is because I regularly use 3 different computers, so it's the easiest way to keep all my email in one place. I like it, though, but if I was more or less restricted to one computer, I wouldn't use Gmail.

Gmail finally has regular Contact Groups! Woohoo!! This was the one feature I really wanted. Someone here showed me a good workaround, but the group feature is great.

Bah! It figures! 2 weeks after I finally break down and start a google group, they make contact groups. Blah.

Just one question, how many of you are regularly on firewalled computers which block gmail and ohter webbased email services? (I suppose few since such a firewall might block enworld too ) I've never had that, but a buddy of mine recently ran into that situation. He had a gmail account, but his office put a firewall in that blocked it. As he doesn't have email access at home, he's virtually cut off.
