Opinions requested: What would it take to "fix" the monk class?

I always thought UBAB was simple. if you ONLY use the BAB from monk and use a monk weapon (or no weapon) you get itterative attacks at -3, otherwise you get them at -5 (like everyone else).

anyhow the changes that I would make:
Monks have a few problems as follows:
1: Stat split. Monks have lots of 'good' stats and a hard time choosing between them (str, con, dex, wis)
2: Low BAB. They get the middle BAB, and often have lower to-hit stat (str or sometimes dex) than say fighters, they also have a harder time getting magic weapons (or they have to use sub-par weapons) to increase this.

End result? you get a really cool character with lots of attacks, a great AC, and some other abilitys who quite simply cant hit jack.

fix? well I would give them the change from OA (added weapons, and the ability to swap out feats) and fighter attack progression. I would also let BAB from other classes stack with UAB. This would fix a number of problems.
1: the biggest reason for UAB is so that you dont have a monk multi to fighter then use his +19 BAB with -3 itterative attacks. If they already have fighter BAB this isn't a problem. also +1 to hit every 4 levels isnt going to unbalance the class.
2: It brings them closer to competative in the 'to hit' catagory without bringing them above the fighter (who should have a higher str, and much more feats)

This would give them an extra attack at fourth level (two before fighters), seventh level (just after a fighter gets his second), tenth level (just before the fighter gets his third), thirteenth level (about half way between a fighters third and fourth attack)
Note that they would not get an attack at 16th as a special case (same at 19th)
This could create problems, so how about a -4 attack progression to balance the higher BAB
5th level, 9th level, 13th level, and 17th level
That last attack would still be +1 better than a modern monk, and the prior attack would be even more of a bonus. This would fix the drunken master's need for special rules (they don't get more than 5 attacks due to BAB regardless of the fact that they should have 6)

I am going to be contrary to some of you. I think the Monk should never have Ki Strike. Come on, use on of those monk weapons if you are fighting an incorporeal undead!

For the rest, the Monk is fine.

It may not be entirely kosher (unless thay make Psionics standard) but I'd replace many of the Monks class abilities with Psionic Feats - things like Speed of Thought and Up the Walls and the various Pyschic strike abilities (ki by any other name) are perfect Monk fodder

I think that the monk class is fine as it is.

That said, I think I would also like a class that is a full-fledged unarmed WARRIOR. Not so many neat-o little talent abilities, bigger BAB, bigger damage, more flexi-feats for combat effectiveness.

That'd certainly make me happy. :)

I just cut it. Then it's balanced. :)

The self sufficient nature has PO'd other players, and the pseudo-oriental flavor is such an annoying discord with the rest of a western medieval fantasy setting. It works well 100% in an oriental campaign like Rokugan or something like that, but I just find it to be annoying.

-Fletch!

Other than using the slightly more flexible OA version of the monk, and the likely Ki Strike changes, I enjoy the monk as is. Now the expanded weapons list from OA and the A&EG are invaluable, it gets boring using only the same 3 monk weapons over and over. :p

Which is one of the big changes in 3.5E, moving Ki Strike to level 4, right?

Does anyone have any proof of this? I have a DM who will allow the use of 3.5 materials if we can supply proof that it will, in fact, be changed (like bards being allowed to wear armor without spell failure). I only ask because I am currently playing a Monk, and HATE having to bust out my nunchackus to hit things with DR, and lose my finessed fists bonus.

I think it's Dragon issue 306.
