Ok, admitting that i know almost jack about rokugan:
How could another crane have any claim whatsoever except via blood liniage? I thought thats how it worked.
Ack! I forgot you were talking about the d20 class ability, rather than the Crane Clan sword, sorry.
In that case, there are several possibilities:
1: He get's the Crane's father's daisho. This would be contested by his cousins, but if there is no other alternative, it could pass to him if he proved himself more Crane than Crab.
2: He quests for his true grandfather's daisho. This would be the 'right' path (do note the quotes).
3: He gets a Kakita or Kaiu blade forged for him, or one of the ones already forged. I don't know if these are detailed in the d20 version, however.
Note that, although the ancestral daisho is important, there are blades forged of varying quality all over Rokugan - though there really isn't a correllation between L5R quality and d20 magical bonuses, +'s and not-so-fantastic abilities (like wounding) may suffice. He would use these until one of the above options was properly satisfied.
Option 1 and 2 are mutually exclusive, of course. One is to say that you are really a Crane, the other is to say that you are still a Crab. Both would be contested by other potential heirs to the blades, naturally.
