Ah. Thanks for the clarification, everybody. I read a good review of the Orange Box collection. I haven't played Half Life before and was thinking about getting it.

I am seriously thinking of getting this myself, also, especially after seeng a video clip of the game play. Amazing.. Is this game, especially the newest offerings, a system hog?

I've got a four year old PC with a decent last generation GFX card (NVidia 6800 equiv); Portal runs smoothly for me.

hey, thanks for the reply. How is your card doing with the Team Fortress and Half Life 2 episode 2? I have an X800 GTO 256 meg cared with DDR3 memory. Think that should be okay?

Should be okay, I think. Mines works fine on HL2e2, though there is a weird bug w/ magenta tables (they should be textured, I think).

I really want to play these games, but my computer is probably too old (P4 2.53GHz, Nvidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra graphics card, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card, 1GB RAM, DSL) to play them reasonably well without turning all the graphical options low or off, with no real chance to upgrade it anytime soon. :(

I have an old P4 2.8 with a BFG 7800 GS OC (the best AGP, IIRC), and I run Ep2 in 1600x1200 with everything on. You should be OK.

EDIT:

Get that BFG 7800 GS OC, it's really cheap nowadays.

I just want to say, Portal is now my favourite game of all time. It has displaced the venerable and heretofore unbeatable Loderunner. I recommend that all join hands in welcoming it. It was born yesterday, so send it a card or something.

I've just finished Portal, and I have to agree. It is pure genius.

Aperture Science
We do what we must because we can
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are dead

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive

I hope The Orange Box is succeessful enough to encourage other publishers to give us more bang for our buck. I played The Darkness and Stranglehold recently. They're both great games, but they can be finished over a weekend. And yet we're supposed to dish $60 for them?

Team Fortress 2 is what really drew me in. A class-based multi-player CTF game that has something for everyone--from the guy who likes to outsmart his foes to the guy who just wants to blow things to bits with his BFG. D&D could learn a thing or two from the philosophies espoused in the director commentary.

Here's a site with some thoroughly enjoyable and downright clever videos: http://orange.half-life2.com/tf2.html

I can also wholeheartedly recommend Portal, it's a fun short little game, reminds me of the innovative platform games of yesteryear.

By the way: Valve is releasing a weighted companion cube desktop toy for christmas. That thing is more useful than the towel and the swiss army knife combined! :)

I have a similiar system (P4 2,4 GHz, 1 GB RAM, and GeForce FX 5900 XT) and can play Portal just fine. I haven't tried Half Life 2 yet, but it will probably work just as well.
