Orcs and 10'x10' Rooms

Norfleet

First Post
Does anyone miss the old pre-3E days, when an entire group of adventurers could get into a fight with an orc in a 10' by 10' room? As of 3E, that 10' by 10' room is now capable of holding only 4 people, which means that only 3 of the partymembers can fight the orc, and the orc can no longer stand in the center of the room.

Isn't that a shame?

Well, you probably know this, but way more people can fit in a 10 by 10 room. It requires you to move into other people's space, however, which can be dangerous.

I think that the number of medium sized characters that can occupy the same space is 4, but that's probably not right. It might be covered in the grappling rules, as you have to step into the space with your target to grapple them.

It makes it quite a pain if your a huge creature, since your entire space can be occupied by 16 different targets, 32 if they were halflings. Of course, since they are at least 2 size categories smaller than you, you can do a number of nasty things to them.

Not if everyone's using two-handed swords. However, it was OK if you were using 18' long awl-pikes (remember the rules on weapon space, too?).

Yes, they can FIT in the room, but it's hard to get into a fight with an orc when you're jammed in like sardines.

Bleh. In the good ol' days, an entire group of adventurers could get into a fight with a DRAGON in a 10'x10' room.

And the Rogue would still have room left over to sneak around behind to backstab it.

[Monty Python Mode On]

Hah!

In my day, we could fit 4 adventurerers, an orc, a dragon, 4 pit traps and a dozen ninja into a 10' by 10 ' room and we considered ourselves lucky to get it.

Hah! In my day, we could fit SIX adventurerers, two orcs, a dragon, 4 pit traps, 6 spear traps, 2 kobolds, 16 stirges, 4 ticked-off dire rats glued to the ceiling and carrying disease, a Leomund's secret chest, and a thoul into that same 10' by 10 ' room!

And the treasure was in a chest behind the secret door!

And we LIKED it that way!

Nah, don't miss it one bit.

This new 10x10 rule concerning horses prompted me to yell one session "Quick! Put the horse in front of us!" When charging orcs were seen coming down a small path.

Heh, in the original I6 Ravenloft module, there was a room that was either 10x10 or 20x20 that had four adult red dragons in it. Granted, they were statues that animated, but it pretty much implied the statues were actual size.
