What the heck has everyone got against Downer?

It has a strong story arc, like the old Wormy strip. Unlike Wormy, each Downer strip does not stand by itself. I had similar issues with the old Dragon comics: Libriam X and that romantic-fantasy one.

Incidentally, notice how the first panel in each OotS strip makes a reference to the prior strip? That gives an inside joke to the person who follows the comic, but it doesn't exculude someone new. I sent the "evilgasm" strip to a guy who quit D&D back in the 80s and he still got all the jokes. You can't say that to someone new to Downer.

Basically Downer would be a great graphic novel. As a long-running monthly comic it needs some jiggering.

Just my two cents.
