Nope not Osric, the PDF is actually the 1e PHB, covers and all just contains rewrites of some rules. I think in the forward he says its what 2e should have been like or something. Saw it years ago....;)

Hmmm... that wouldn't have been Hackmaster, would it?

No, that game, in another alternate reality, would have been called 3E, according to its preface. :D

I actually just today found that the full S&W is not too dissimilar from 1E, itself. 20+ level range, spells that went up to 7th or 9th level, different sized hit dice and weapon damages... When I looked at it previously, it must've been the whitebox version.

Wow, I had no clue. With some google fu I found a download copy.

Is this legal?

No, not even a little. :)

If you want a legal 1e clone, OSRIC will do the trick.

If you want a legal "Gary Gygax style 2e," then Joe Bloch's Adventures Dark and Deep would be worth checking out. Still in Beta and all three books are available for Free PDF download:

RPGNow.com - BRW Games - The leading source for indie RPGs

The Specific intent of Adventures Dark & Deep is to create an RPG based on GG's ideas and notes for his planned 2nd edition. Mr. Gygax was ousted from TSR before the official 2e came out.

100% happy nedjer on the OGL front, as I've just had confirmation on compatibility and other stuff for the soon to arrive Tainted :) The game will be fully legal and able to identify with one of the top Original Game systems.

My take from this is: when it comes to OGC, ask and you may well a) receive and b) save a lot of time.

I have seen this- it is essentially a 1E/C&C hybrid system. Someone posted it on the C&C forums a year or so ago.

as for the OP- there are some direct re-writes of the OD&D rules out there including one hyperlinked online only version, a "all 3 books in one" compilation, etc, and a few others. And I do not mean the retroclones. several of those sites have been taken down.
