Original Psi HB vs. Revised?

If you are interested in a more advanced psionic combat system you might want to check out Mindscapes or Hyperconcious from Malhavoc Press. Mindscapes is a "psionic-combat deluxe" system written by the same guy who wrote 3e psionics and is designed to go with 3.5e, Hyperconscious is an acenture containing both the Mindscapes rules and other additions. I haven't read either of them, but I suspect both are good products.
(I personally don't purchase Malhavoc Press products, but that has nothing to do with it.)

Actually, Mindscapes is 3.0, and Hyperconscious contains the upgrade of the Mindscapes stuff to 3.5 (plus some other stuff).

Any particular reason you don't?

Oh, and I'd like to add my voice to those saying: "Forget about the 3.0 psionics handbook, and get the Expanded one instead." Instead of psions being weak on the level of Adepts, they're now among the more powerful classes in the game. They got rid of many of the things that hampered psions in 3.0: Multiple ability dependency (in 3.0, each "school" of psionics used a different stat for DC and max level, so if you wanted versatility you had to have multiple high stats), psionic combat (psionic combat was useless against non-psions, and did ability damage to psions, so a psion usually had to hold some of his few power points back in case they ran into a monster with psionic attacks), lack of scaling (3.0 psionic powers had few level-based variables in their effects, notably in offensive powers - 3.5 powers allow you to spend more PP in order to get a better effect), and tiny pool of PP (much larger in 3.5).

Yep, the XPH is miles better than the PsiHB, which was one of the worst 3.0 products whatsoever (IMHO, of course; with the Malhavoc stuff it was almost bearable).

It could still be a lot better now (IMHO), but at least it is a huge improvement over the old one.

So, if they keep that up, maybe the 4th edition psionics will start to be likeable. :)

Bye

Hmm. The website says this is the v3.5 Mindscapes they're selling; I assumed they meant that it was updated to reflect post-XPH changes, but I guess I was wrong.

I don't purchase Malhavoc Press products because they release crippled-OGC and that is not something I want to support.
I typed down an explanation on what crippled OGC is and why I don't like it, but on second thought that will take us waaayyy of topic and may very well sink into violating the forum rules, so I'll just leave it at that.

Though their products are very good and I must confess I did purchase a few... :o

Oh. I guess I won't need it afterall. :\

Actually, there is a psionic combat system in the XPH, it's just not readily visible.

Any telepathic attack power is an attack mode, and Empty Mind and two other powers (all of which defend your mind against any kind of mind-affecting effect) are defense modes.

Unlike previous systems, you are not required to use defense modes. You can always trust in your Will save.

PS I sold my original for a slice of pizza.

The version of Mindscapes currently being sold is 3.5-compliant. Hyperconscious includes parts of Mindscapes, plus an adventure.
