OSR OSE Starter Set: Dungeons of the Undermoon

Necrotic Gnome has been mentioning Dungeons of the Undermoon for a while, but I paid attention to it only with the latest development update email.

It is a boxed set with three books: players, referees (with a base town) and adventure + bestiary. It covers levels 1 - 3 (I wonder if they'll later release an Expert Set... :ROFLMAO: )

The books are in layout and the set is supposed to come out next year. I'm mostly interested in the town and adventure, but I'm curious about how they'll present the rules for beginners.

Honestly, this will be a nice thing to have for all sorts of OSR games that don't have their own. It would be trivial to use this with other OSR systems, like Shadowdark. (Having a home base and more levels of play would put this ahead of the Scarlet Minotaur adventure in the quickstart, IMO.)

General consensus is that OSE is a good reference manual, but not a teaching tool. Something that the older B/X was always really good. If this change the paradigm of OSE, letting people learn from this (having a new version of all the good advice from BX missing in OSE) and then use the OSE for reference when getting good at the system, is the "spark" I've always tough was missing in the system. Finger crossed!

It was always what I felt was lacking in OSE: a good introductory material and begginer friendly sections like examples of play. I hope it covers the same bases the old red box covered!

I've played in The Hole in the Oak and The Incandescent Grottoes and enjoyed both. My party members and I didn't have much of a problem grokking OSE. That said, while everyone in the party wasn't experienced with OSR, they were very experienced with D&D and other Fantasy TTRPGs.

If this world is the same setting as for those 2 adventures, that makes me curious and interested in a purchase. I've seen a few bad attempts by Referees at homebrewing a world that could support those adventures. So I can see this being a good set for Ref's that haven't had much experience with world and setting brewing.
