[OT] 10/17/89: Where were you then and how will you commemorate it?

I was in a dorm room in Germany, getting ready to watch the game in the middle of the night. Saw the earthquake live on the preview show from across the ocean.

I was watching the game on TV actually, ABC I think

All of a sudden everything in the picture shook, I thought the camera man like droped the camera or something, then static, then, "We are experiencing technical difficulties please stand by" The slightly later they came back with a news report showing all the devistation.

Yeppers- me and some friends of mine (all of us were seniors in '89 in highschool) were sitting around watching the game and drinking beer. We thought it was really crappy camera work when the camera shook. :) Course then we realized what was going on...so we watched the news coverage going on.

I was in high school at the time. When the quake hit, I was on the phone with a really pretty girl, and was about 30 seconds from finally getting a date with her. Never did recapture the moment :(

I was at college (Mass. Art), we were having a sign making/all night party to prepare for a march on the State House the next day to protest cuts in state higher ed. funding. The rally went on as schedualed, but we didn't get much publicity.

I was at work at a bank when the quake hit.

I remember watching the TILE floor impossibly roll toward me in waves.

I was so facinated that I didn't even think of ducking for cover, so my boss practically tackled me and made me get under my desk.

It was over so fast, but it took me HOURS to get home as all the traffic lights were out. I was getting anxious cuz it was my girlfriends birthday, and we had a date ( was there ever a time before cell phones!??!!! ). For years we joked about "that time I made the earth move for her".

All my relatives were calling us, frantic to make sure we we safe. I'm sure the rest of the national news made it seem like California had fallen into the Pacific Ocean.

The loss of life and property was a true tragedy, but still just a drop in the bucket compared to 09/11/2001. I can't even imagine the horror of being at ground zero NYC...
