[OT] Americans I need your aid !

Every state really has their own culture...

Or more, here in South Carolina there seems to be a difference between folks in the lowcountry and those upstate. Furthermore true native Charlstonians actually have their own unique speech mannerisms and behavior patterns. We also have the distinct Gullah population, decendants of former slaves. Many areas of the country have notable Native Indian populations.

Very generally speaking, it is fairly easy to spot someone who hails from another part of the country. They usually set themselves apart by their speech, mannerisms, dress and lol the way they drive.

The one thing everyone can agree on is that America is a land of great diversity in both landscape and people.

i think the first thing you should list about americans is that they are "resistant to being labled"

come now you guys, you know there is a distictly american culture and just because not everyone fits into the culture doesn't mean you cant make fairly good generalizations. He're some of mine about americans and lets see if you guys think i'm wrong.

americans watch a lot of tv.
american are good at business.
americans drive big automobiles.
americans have good healthcare.

see, simple things we agree on..

the point of this guy's survey is to get the opinions of some americans about americans, its not about being true. its like any other opinion survey and doesn't have anything to do with facts. that being said, i'm sorry, but i dont want to participate.

The purpose is to show that even though there are a number of recurring themes and idea that pervade American society, there are as many different views of America as there are Americans.

Fair enough. At worst then, its an exercise in showing that not everyone has the same stereotype, which is a reasonable thing to demonstrate.

I still personally think that most of those statements aren't answerable, because I cannot rationally lump people together and still complete the statement in the spirit in which I expect it is intended. I mean, one could say,"Americans are a highly diverse group of people," or, "The most important thing in life to most Americans is air." and be accurate, but I doubt that's the point.

But I suppose that in and of itself is an answer. *shrug*. In any case, good luck with the assignment!

I agree with Ashtal. This survey will reveal much more information about the person filling out this survey, rather that what the "general american" is like. If you ask me, "general american" is a perfect example of an oxymoron.

america is a boiling pot of cultures, races, creeds, religons, there is no ONE typical america, each are unique in their own aspect and traditions on the place that they live and are raised therein.

Truly this will either be a tongue in cheek poll (see mine ) or devolve something about the poller themselves..

it's tough to judge one flower in a sea of flowers and say "That's a common one"
