I thought the same thing.

British royals need some dress sense. They should take lessons from this guy.

Aside from that Picture with his uniform, you can't tell he's not just one of the guys. Hell, even with the uniform, he still looks pretty casual.

Have you danes got any daughters we can recommend to Will or Harry?:D

I'll remind you that Denmark is the oldest monarchy and the oldest existing nation in the world. Those that think the english monarchy certainly must be older I'll remind that the first king of England was King Kanute (Knud) who was the little brother of the king of Denmark at the time, and was given the country as a present.

don't forget the King of England gave up his throne for a commoner. An American.:D

How about Egypt? As oldest nation, not monarchy it hasn't been a nation without interuption, but much older and much more total history as a nation overall.

I'm certainly no expert on such matters, but as I understood it, that was just a cover story and what really happened was that he was pressured into abdicating by the real powers that be in Britain because he was a Nazi sympathizer.

At any rate, when I saw the thread title, I was hoping that Australia was spilitting from the British monarchy and was going to crown their own queen. That'd be sort of cool, IMO.

I think I did say existing nation. IIRC Egypt was formed in the late 1940's as the nation it is now.

At least they will now get their first royalty that is actually australian.

Why the quotation marks?

The japanese might dispute that with you.

The quotes around "prince" are quite obvious. This guy is nothing special, just an overbred git who happened to be born in the right place at the right time. Royalty is a concept that was outdated before it was invented.

That would be China, though Denmark might be the oldest nation of the western world. China has maintained it's own culture and (mostly) it's independence and territorial integrity for over 2000 years. Every enemy conquering it has been assimilated into the country.

Egypt is hardly the same nation now as it was during the pharaohs. It's culture, language, enthnicity, religion and identity have all changed immensely. It just happens to encompass roughtly the same territory.

Just a word of caution to my fellow Americans

Insulting European Royalty is not something you should do lightly, as I know many Brits (my experience is limited to the British monarchy) who take their Royalty very seriously. Those who insult the institution should know that some people might take that very seriously.

And for those Americans who think that they idea of Royalty is silly, consider this: the Queen is as much an icon to Great Britain as the Flag is here. The words "God & Country" (as in "served his duty to..." and also "gave his life for...") were originally refered to God and the King (or Queen). Just as an American might find someone bad-mouthing the Stars and Stripes at best rude and at worst treacherous, a Danishman might feel the same about someone calling their Prince a "git."

Why is this important, well for half the worlds population (the female part) this is the realisation of the ultimate dream come true, meeting a prince and becoming a queen.

Not quite. Over here on this side of the pond, we disliked royalty so much that we fought a war to get out from under them. It was a few hundred years ago, but many of us still aren't particularly impressed with them.

If I've strayed too far into the political, I apologize.
