For the record, I dislike cigarettes and cigarette manufacturers in the extreme. So I was happy to hear about this verdict handed down today by my fellow Californians:

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Philip Morris Cos., the No. 1 cigarette maker, was ordered Friday to pay a record $28 billion to a 64-year-old woman with lung cancer who blamed her tobacco addiction on the company's failure to warn her of the risks of smoking.

Yeah!! Stick it to them!

28 billion...as much as I am against smoking, and my daughter has lung problems so it is an issue because of her, this will never hold up IMHO. That is a lot of miney for one individual. I may be wrong, but it will be appealed 4 ever.

$28 Billion? That is so out of control PM is almost garaunteed to win on appeal.

I am an ex-smoker, and the last time I read the side of a cigarette pack it read "Hey stupid, these things will kill you!" So I think these lawsuits are a bunch of bull****.

Money will never be paid, PM will hold it up as long as Exxon has held up for the Valdes oil spill (sp).

It really is out of control.

I'm still wondering why no state DA has gotten around to trying some tobacco CEOs for conspiracy to commit murder. When the tobacco companies knew their product was killing and lied about it, that was a death sentence for many people, wasn't it?

Of course, it wouldn't be the current CEOs, but the CEOs who were in charge at the time.

I mean, 64 billion would make this old lady easily one of the wealthiest people on the planet. Think what that money could actually do if it went to helping ALL people with lung cancer.

Plus, no matter how much money courts force Big Tobacco to pay, it's not like people are going to quit smoking. Should smoking be made illegal? Sometimes I just wonder, 'what is the end result we (as a society) are seeking here, anyway?'

Ah, we can but dream.

Dream of a smoke-free day, when the companies that make *bleach!* cigs and *doubleickybleach!* cigars will fold and fade away, their lies and greed nothing more than HARMLESS smoke on the wind.

But then again, having mild asthma, cigs make it hard to breath and cigars are nigh deadly. So I am quite prejudiced.

What a ridiculous sum of money to award to one person! If it were a class action suit, then perhaps.

I, too am an ex-smoker. (Started at 12. I was a bad girl.) Those warnings on the cigarette packs have been there since, hmm, the mid 1960s I think. And the dangers of tobacco haven't exactly been kept secret.

I just don't understand why so many people won't take responsibility for their own actions.

With regards to warning labels on the packs:

My sense is this woman started smoking in the 1950s, and became addicted before warning labels existed.

I'm pretty sure the amount will be drastically reduced on appeal, but I still count it a victory. There are a lot of people who die from cigarette-related illnesses each year. That's a lot of lawsuits. A 28 billion settlement, even if appealed, will open doors for others to bring PM down.
