[OT] Cable Modem Users, help me with something

I'm not entirely sure, since I haven't seen a bill in quite a while, but I do believe that it's roughly somewhere between 45 and 50 dollars, not including an extra IP address for the other computer on my network (only 5 bucks for that though)

As far as I know, I have no limit on how much I can download, and late at night I've gotten up to 1 mbps i think... it's been a while since I've really payed attention to the real speed of my downloads.

I live in the southwestern chicago suburbs and my provider is AT&T.

My provider was MediaOne who was bought out by AT&T... I never had any complaints with them. They provided excellent service (the net was down once in the year and a half they were in charge), had friendly tech support people, and didn't charge you to divide up your cable modem's net acess through a network. Not to mention I had a cool email address since there weren't nearly as many people on MediaOne as there were on other services...

AT&T is nothing but a bunch of fascist bastards. Almost as soon as they took over, my internet went down for over a week when Excite went under. Every bill is bigger than last months bill, just about every month the service goes down for a few hours. Not to mention they took away my email address. Their tech support people are real s too.

Month, I think, but as I have never felt the need to test the boundary, I honestly cannot say if this is true. There are friends of mine that download ten times this amount in a month as long as they do it at 2 a.m. when the bandwidth usage is less likely to piss someone off. I must conclude that the barrier is pretty flexible.

Are you sure about those up/down speed numbers? T1 speeds are: Upload Speed: 2-10Mbps, Download Speed: 2-10Mbps. If you are getting 27Megabits per second download speed from a cable modem, you have the same as about 3 T1's. That would be damn good (though it is possible).

We have 2 cable modem services available.



The first is through Click!

There are two service options available.

1 mb down / 128k up for $26.95 a month. No limits. 1 Computer.

2 mb down / 256k up for $64.95 a month. No limits. 5 Computers.

The city of Tacoma (state of Washington) has it's own cable television and cable internet service that is operated by the Tacoma Public Utilities Department.

The city spent $90 million dollars to install the system and it is now city wide. They plan to expand into the areas surrounding the city in the near future.



The second service is through AT&T Broadband. (Boo! Hiss!)

They don't specify what the speeds are for $45.95 a month.

As far as I can tell, there are no limits.

I pay $35.00/month but that is part of a package that includes Cable TV (with a ludicrous number of premium channels) for $114.00/month. There are no limitations on my access and it comes with a website. If I install a 10base T hub I can add other machines at will with no additional cost...

I know I never get more than 1Mbps personally, but they provide cable modems that are capable of those speeds, and the network has a fiber optic infrastructure. I think that what the company is trying to say is that there is a 27/10 pool for everyone in a particular area.

However, there is no cap other than the limitations of the coaxial cable, the NIC, the PC, and the amount of bandwidth being used at a particular time.

I was at the 1.5meg plan, but I stepped it down to 750ish speed, because I wasn't using it as often.
