Anyone see that Animal Planet special, "The Future is Wild"? Basically it talked about what scientists play with the idea of what would happen in the next 5, 100, and 200 million years on Earth. It had some interesting creatures in it, like the Snowstalker and the Silver Spider. Some great ideas for new D&D monsters. 
Anyways... At the end of the special, they were talking how there are big 8-ton land squids versus smaller, tree-swining squids. They mentioned something on their intelligence is almost human-like. So that made me thinking...the mind flayers/illithids will take over the Earth in 200 million years!
One of the scientists must of been a D&D player.
