[OT] Gaming Consoles: Which one?

Eye Tyrant said:
Well, I went out today and "test-drove" each of the 3 consoles, and I must say that the Xbox is impressive. To me the graphics and controls of the PS2 seemed "herky-jerky" (I thought perhaps it was the system or monitor it was on, but I went to another location and it was the same). I thought the graphics and overall smoothness of play was much better in both the Xbox and the Gamecube. Though the Gamecube's controllers felt like something out of a Dollar General store though.

As far as games went I played the following:

Xbox:
Nascar 2002
NFL Fever 2002 (I think that was the name)
Operation Delta Force (I think, some flight simulator type deal)
Some Snowboard game...

PS2:
One of the Pod Racing games
WCW Wrestling

Gamecube:
NBA something or other
Super Smash Bros
Pikmin (or is it Pikimin?)

My two boys went with me also. One liked the PS2 and one the Xbox...

If I had to make a decision right now it would be the Box, but fortunately I don't have to do that until probably Friday of next week...

Again thanks for all the input, and if anyone has anymore, feel free to post.

First, before I start I'd just like to point out I have all 3 game systems (yes, I know, I suck;) ).

Yes, I agree with you that the Xbox has better graphics but frankly they're honestly not that much better and the games for the Xbox just don't come close to the PS2. You'll *never* be able to play one of the best console RPGs out there, Final Fantasy X, on the Xbox.
I have a whopping 4 games for the Xbox:
• Halo - an outstanding game
• Dead or Alive 3 - A nice looking game but not very exciting
• Night Caster - An okay game that can get old playing
• WWF: Raw - I just got it but it looks great

I get a lot of games and I just can't seem to find any decent Xbox games. I've even bought games, played them for a day or two and then taken them back.
Btw, I am truly beginning to hate the Xbox controller. It's like a can of Spam with sticks.

Where as on the PS2 I could go on and on about the fantastic games it has and they just keep getting better.

Smooth graphics mean nothing when the game play is crap. That's the main thing to remember.

Yet.

PS2's a fairly mature system with a large selection of games, and that's a good thing, but we have to expect the Xbox's game library to grow tremendously in the next year.

I agree with mmadsen on that. The Xbox has only been out since November. I think the games will improve.

PS2 back wards compatable FF10: best final fantasy since 1, metal gear solid2, max payne, tony hawk 3, soul caliber2(later this year),hard drive/modem coming soon.

Who wouldn't want to play FF10 or soul caliber2, especialy online when the HD/modem comes out?

Suprisingly, I have never gotten into FF... Any of them, at all... I don't know why, but something about those games, it just doesn't click for me like it seems to for everyone else...

Blashpemey!

Never gotten into FF?! What's WRONG with you, man?! ;)

No, I can see it. It's not for everyone. But cursed if I can see why not. :)

Anyhoo, if FF or console RPG's aren't a big draw...then definately Gamecube/Xbox is your descision.

Once again, it's best to go with the system that has the games you like. That's #1 importance. If the games are crap, that's a good amount of cash plunked down on a toy you'll never use.

So, I guess it comes down to Smash Bros. Melee vs. Halo. :)

Pick your poison. I'm going to go kick the crud out of some Pokemon, meanwhile. :)

Well, I did go out and rent the movie today if that counts for anything...

Before you listen to any of us, you really have to understand something. We all have a huge agenda in this. Virtually no console gamers out there are willing to give consoles they don't have a fair shake, their system will always be the best.

That being said I have a PS2, my nephew has a x-box so I have played it a lot.

The PS2 rocks its second and 3rd gen games are really cool GTA3 being one of the best games I have ever played. FF10 looks really good, but um sorry but it sucks. Yeah, yeah the movie sequences look great, but dang they bust into a movie or really drawn out poorly written dialogue every 5 seconds. Oh wait I took another 5 steps I think its time for another movie, put down that controller and get some pop corn.. They should of had a skip the dumb movie/dialogue I want to play the freakin game button. Sorry after FF7 it all went downhill.
Outside of my FFX rant really they have a nice solid library of game salready out and chances are they will continue to get better.

X-Box its 1st gen games are competing with PS2s second and 3rd gen games. Are all their games great no, but about the same % are great as the ps2 games are great. Halo is a blast, just don't get into a 4 person 25 kill rocket launcher death match, other than dumb multiplayer games like that its a blast. SSX tricky great fun and slightly better graphics than the ps2s version. Amped I like this one better for snowboarding for 2 reasons, 1 I can put my own music into the game via the hard drive and that rocks beond belief, since it is so much better to integrate the music you like than mute the tv and play good music in the background, and 2 I prefer more realistic stunts(not realistic just more realistic than ssx), I like the snow boarders to stay in their bindings for example. Obi-won ok not a great game, and far to easy, but my nephew who is eight can't stop playing the dang game, and heck being a jedi is cool. (but then again I loved jedi powers battles on the ps). Also some really cool games are coming out for it, I totally dig this car game where you get various weird missions like run people off the road, with two different mission tracks either as a cop or as a yakuza pawn.

My friend the rat bastard his job is writing reviews for x-box games, the dang bastard is getting paid to play new games before they are released. Anyway he came into this hating the x-box, he wanted to review ps2 or gamecube games. He was all I'm have to review x-box games now yuck. They gave him a free slightly modified x-box to do his job with. After the 1st two games he played he had to buy himself an x-box, so for whenever he gets shifted toanother product and he has to give his company x-box back he would still have one. That's how cool he thought it was.

I would really avoid the gamecube there aren't many new games on the horizon for them. I don't know what they are doing maybe testing the waters or something before they devote to much capital into it, or what but they really need more games to be on the soon to be released list if they are too make it.

With out a huge discussion, my choice (after playing them all) would be the X-box. I like the genre of games better than Nintendo, the graphics seem to be top notch, plus it easily doubles as a CD player and DVD player (for $30 extra).
