OT Geneology - and I'm Part Celestial!

Tonguez

A suffusion of yellow
I have been able to trace my Geneology back to about the 10th Century (which could be anything between the 9th and 12th Centuries as dates back then are a bit iffy) also it seems that at that point my Ancestor was a 'Celestial being' (possibly a grandson of the (Polynesian) god Tane) who came down and 'slept' with a mortal woman.

Other interesting ancestors are a man who turned into a shark, a woman from beneath the sea and a powerful priest who may have been a Tahitian Volcano god!!!

So anyone else got interesting ancestors who would make great RPG fodder?

While I don't quite know what to make of your post:D I have an interesting story. According to one source, my last name (Kennan) is a bastardization of Gaelic for "Beloved of Aodh", who the same source says was some sort of fire god. I went bragging to my friend about this, and he was impressed. We then looked up his last name (Hauck) and the entry simply said "Aodh". Any Europeans out there have any more information on Aodh? I have been unable to find any other info on this diety, except one that indicates that it was a goddess rather than a god.

Not to be nitpicky but it is geneAlogy.

There are often interesting stories like these. In europe during the middle ages a lot of the royal and noble families "researched" their lines back to famous people and even gods. Even in roman times the Julii were supposed to be descended from the goddess Venus I believe.

I find references to Aodh as the goddess of fire, but also one where HE fell in love with Ila the primal goddess of earth, and they had Kaido, the earth god and Arudain, the fire god. Then Ila, Aodh and the other primal gods disappeared leaving behind their spirit elemental children.

I may not be correct as it has been a while since I immersed myself in Roman history and mythology, but I believe the legend that the Julian family, including Julius Caesar, was decended from Venus was created by Virgil. I believe this myth was based on a similarity between the name Julius and a character from the Trojan War (a Trojan, I presume) whom I can't recall now. Anyway, this connection was completely ficticious, as the names in question were not the same or related in any case.

I am supposedly related to Jesse James, not that I necessarily believe it. What's funny is that every time this comes up in conversation (which isn't that often), whoever I'm talking to also seems to somehow be related to Jesse. Apparently he came from a big family.

Hehe everyone is releated to everyone somehow. Vice President Al Gore, and winner of the popular vote in 2000 for president is my 5th cousin. :D

You guys all have cooler family name histories than me. :(

One story about my family's past is pretty funny though. My great-great-great-great (great?) grandfather was a Confederate general during the Civil War, and after the war was over, he was put in prison for calling Lincoln a "tyrant."

Also, one of our other ancestors was performing in the play Lincoln was watching the night of his assassination. Coincidence? :D

wow tonguez, that's pretty cool. the best i've been able to trace my family back is roughty 200 years ago... how did you manage to go back over 1000 years?

and folks, do be careful about where you hear about tracing your genealogy back to gods... after all, hitler and his SS elite claimed that they could trace their genealogy back to the norse gods... right. :)

Thanks for the info Dragongirl...

In the same vein as Neowulf and Dragongirl's information; an ancestor of mine was supposedly George Washington's maid and alleged mistress.

I do know for a fact however that a relative of mine (George Frost Kennan) was ambassador to Russia, and wrote the "Long Telegram" and "Mr. X essay", which helped to spark off the Cold War.
