(OT?) Here Comes Indiana Jones!

That's actually the year I was born. LOL :)

Heh, I was only three but my parents took me to see it anyway. I don't have a personal recollection of the opening scroll because I couldn't read :D (my mom whispered it to me in my ear)....

I still remember that first viewing however, I even cried when Porkins died! Needless to say, I thought it was pretty intense.

But I have read (and my father has mentioned) that they added the subtitle when the movie was re-released in the early 80's (right before Empire?).
You're correct, but it was right after Empire. Steve Sansweet cleared up the confusion and muddled memories by going directly to Lucasfilm's film archivist and getting the definitive answer on when the "Episode IV: A New Hope" was added:

It was added for the April 10, 1981 rerelease. Yes I'm an old school Star Wars freak who knows these kinds of things. :)

As for the title, it has been and always will be simply "STAR WARS".

Then you didn't see it when it was released in 1977.

Actually, I did. I will admit, though, that my memory isn't the greatest. I do remember the things that article you posted was talking about. I was a little older than you were at the time(I was 9 when Star Wars came out), and I remember reading a Time magazine article talking about the fact that there were supposed to be 9 movies total, and that Star Wars was in the middle of it. I don't remember when the article was published, but I am pretty sure that it was in the summer of 1977, after Star Wars became a hit.

I was 8 years old when I saw it, and there was no 'A New Hope' or Episode 4. I like Lucas, really I do, but I get the impression that he's an inveterate BS'er, and he spends a good deal of time spouting stuff off, and then finding he has to actually back up his off-the-cuff comments.

I just don't like him constantly messing around with established cinematic icons over and over again. Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the greatest films to ever grace the screen, IMHO, and I don't want to see Lucas constantly tweaking it to satisfy his tastes 20+ years down the line.

Very cool. I recall seeing Empire in the theater down the street from my house. That was the same theater that I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark in (even though I was only 4).

Ah! That's the link I was looking for! :) I knew they re-released it sometime before Return of the Jedi (and added the addition title), I just couldn't remember exactly when.

I actually refer to it as "A New Hope," "The Original Star Wars," or when I'm lazy "Episode 4." Just because while is was the first (and my favorite) it is part of a larger story that I fully enjoy as a whole. :D

Heretic! MESA CAST YOU OUT!

(OK, I'll stop now.) :)

Enough star wars.. sheesh, it's a Indy thread. Raiders of the Lost Ark is a contender for my favorite movie. I don't actually pick these out, but it's up there with the Crow. Man.. finally in dvd, and for less than $50!!! WOOT =)

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm definitely more eager for Indy on DVD than Star Wars.. I mean.. Indy is just cooler.

Man, now I wanna play a d20 modern game set in pre WW2.. world, with a raiders of the lost ark type theme.. man that would be sweet. Nazi's make the best villians

I wonder if the "chapters" will appear anywhere on the discs themselves (special materials, menus, etc.)....

The announcement stated that all the bonus material would be on the fourth disc.

I am sure there will be menus for chapter, maybe language in the case of a multi-language version, etc. DVDs without chapters are laughably primitive. :)
