Now THIS is Australia Day

Because it just ISN'T AUSTRIAN for Australia Day to fall on a weekend, ya know?

Let us all pause to give thanks for all that we have today, and to hope that the brave firefighters will extinguish those blazes that threaten to turn our wide brown land even browner.

Right, that's enough of that. On to THIS:

Mark... do you keep track of every holiday that comes along? :)

Thanks for the thoughts.

I try to do so. I find it interesting what people like to celebrate or significantly recognize. :)

I hope the fires get put out. :(

...is a beer!

Just out of curiosity, what is it exactly that we're celebrating? The genocide of thousands of indigenous cultures? The destruction of almost 4% of the continents forests on a continent that only has 11% of it's area covered in vegetation of which only 7% is arable? Clearfelling? Salination? The current racist and capitalist policies of our government? The mining and sale of uranium, of which Australia has 43% of the world's resources, to America, Britain, China, Indonesia without any garuntee that it is used in nuclear warheads? The fact that half of our university placements are going to overseas students who can pay and not our own people who are also more qualified?

Australians all let us rejoice, for we are stupid and gullible...

P.S. Some of the figures quoted are from memory and I haven't bothered to check 'em up so therefore there may be some discrepencies. I recommend checking with Friends of the Earth and the Australian Conservation Foundation for more accurate figures.

Oh fer Pete's sake... Eric's Grandma can hardly be offended by tongue-in-cheek humour... she has no teeth after all!

Sure, there was a serious twist at the end, but sheesh, these are things that SHOULD be thought about on a day like this; do not Americans remember their fallen on July 4th? Many native Australians died in the growth and establishment of this country and today there are still many problems that need addressing so that we can advance and grow into the future.

And anyway, comedy is all about social commentary. I never said I was good at it though...
