A couple of points:
#1 - Drawmack, if it sounded like I was attacking all virus writers, I wasn't - but there are a LOT of virus releasers who also write and modify their own code to distribute, and these are the people that give me the most headache. Maliciousness never dies, and the people who incorporate things like the insidious payload attached to W32/blaster will not get praise from me. So if it looked personal I apologize.
#2 - The thread is getting a little too hot under the collar between posters, when it didn't start out that way. Viruses, like piracy, are a touchy subject, and for some reason seem to lead nowhere fast. Someone also reminded me by e-mail that it's very probable that some U.S. States have indibidual laws against writing ANY viruses in the first place, making it and even grayer area.
So, rather than allow personal insults and attacks to fly, I'm closing this thread. If someone wishes to discuss the worm (like say, after August 16th, once any full effects are realized), I'm all for it.
But i'm definitely leaving this thread up, because the links that Drawmack and others have posted, and the recommendations to patch your copies of Win XP and 2000, are very important! We may not be able to stop the spread TO us, but we can certainly stop the spread FROM us.
