I'll all for such legislation. I mean, we have it for movies, so why don't we have it for games. In fact, it should be even more stressed with games because the game player is an active participant in the violence rather than a passive specatator as is the case with movies.

If being exposed to something doesn't affect you, then I guess all those companies who spend millions and millions on commercials are deluding themselves. If anyone thinks that repeated exposure to violence has no effect on them, they are simply deluding themselves. I'm not saying you're going to want to kill people after a Quake-marathon, but deep down inside it changes something about you.

What happened to parental responsibility? It still exists, but society keeps telling children (and parents) that it doesn't. We need to fix the terrible problems with our societal outlook instead of blaming lawmakers for trying to put a bandaid on it. Laws like this don't address the root problem, which is what we *should* be complaining about.

When laws like this appear, people should be examining themselves and the impact their actions (or inactions) are having on their society.

We DO NOT have legislation in the U.S. requiring a ratings system for movies. The movie industry started its own ratings system, and administers that system. It's completely voluntary -- a movie is not required to be submitted for a rating, and does not have to have a rating to be released. Of course, there are some theaters and some video outlets that will not carry unrated movies, but the movie's makers do have a free choice in the matter.

I think that is what the video and computer game industry needs to do: develop its own system and do it voluntarily.

The last thing we need is more government regulation and interference in our lives. And legislating a ratings system like this just smacks of censorship to me. Once it starts in the gaming industry, what's to stop it from spreading to other areas? Once the government starts taking away freedoms and rights, it's almost impossible to ever get them back.
