The two cents from a looooongtime fan of Ep IV-VI. Episode I reused script ideas Lucas had for Ep. IV, but had to cut out. Luke was into racing and canyon piloting, and had a bunch of friends, including a would-be girlfriend. This is learned from a SW screensaver that had the script into it. Also, he and Leia were about 16 years-old in the script (as opposed to Han's 30s). Obi-Wan didn't mention Anakin being a Tatooine native, just a great pilot he served with during the Clone Wars. So, when time came out for Ep I, Lucas felt the urge to include his love of hot rods (American Grafitti?) in it, and turned Anakin into his new Luke. For reasons beyond reason, he tweaked the script to have Anakin be half the age he should have been (8 instead of 16). Now wouldn't Ep I make a lot more sense if Anakin was a 15-16 years old teen? He'd be into cars and have a gang, and Queen Amidala would even be able to flirt with him without acting mother-like! (Those looks she trades with Anakin in the end of Ep. I are so BADLY misplaced! And Anakin's "This one's in the bag!" grin back at her? And now he's 18 and she's what, 34?). IMHO, Anakin's fall to the Dark Side should occur from revolt, not whine. Say, he goes back to free his mother from the flying gonzo-wannabe, only to find out she's been dead for some time, in an accident. Without anyone to blame, he lashes out at the junkyard-owner (who was pretty kind to him as a kid) and kills him. Once that line is crossed, there's no turnin back. He gets called to serve in the Clone Wars before anyone can find out his deed, but he then starts to think he "got away with it", and begins using the easier path to quell the war, i.e. killing by the bucketfold, revelling in the battlefield. Obi-Wan finds that alarming, and soon discovers the death of Watto. When he confronts Anakin (who, with his newfound boldness conquered the heart of Amidala), sabers fly and Anakin, feeling betrayed by his mentor and his wife, turns to Palpatine, who posion's the young war hero's heart with pride and resentment. Anakin become Palpatine's greatest supporter and, in Ep. III, helps the old coot hunt down the Jedi to the last. When he confronts Obi-Wan again, his anger gets in the way, and he looses his hand to the Jedi's lightsaber, and most of his body to a fissure of molten lava (as per the novelization of Ep. VI). As Ep. III closes, Amidala gives birth to the twins, who are given to Owen Lars and Bail Organa for safekeeping. Amidala and Bail marry and move to Alderaan, where she dies from frail health, just as Anakin's surgery comes to a close, with the newly crowned Emperor welcoming his new enforcer ("Rise, Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith"). That's my two cents, anyway.
