I saw that.

What's amazing to me is that girl is my age (roughly, she doesn't know exactly how old she is). I've occasionally looked at that picture over the past 17 years and wondered how she was doing or if she was alive. I'm glad she will be recieving some money for the use of her image. She has led a very hard life.

The photographer has apparently recieved marriage proposals for her by men who have only seen that picture. I'm not surprised.

amazing article

That picture has haunted me for years. It caught the eye of a friend, who hung it on his dorm room door when I was at college in the mid-80s. I hadn't realized until I saw a National Geographic compendium a couple of years ago how famous it was.

Imagine how hard it must have been to find her. She can't even show her face to strangers! Amazing, what Steve McCurry accomplished.

She _does_ look aged now. This is common over there... I've travelled in Tibet, Pakistan, and rural China and the people there often look a full generation older than they would in the US, due mostly to their constant exposure to the elements and the hard lives they live.

I'm glad that she'll benefit from her fame, finally.
