[ot] Norton Anti-virus failure

Okay, this seems to be the correct forum.

All you computer gurus out there, I can't seem to open NAV any more. I double-click on the icon in the quickstart bar (by the clock). Nothing. It's running, but I can't access it.

I recently installed Norton Utilities. I think it may be running from NU. If so, how do I access it through NU? If not, should I uninstall and reinstall NAV? I found the system recovery CD, which lets me reinstall the original software.

Thanks,
Her. Ap.

In my experience, clicking on the system tray icon never works, just go to the program through the Start Menu, it should work fine.

I've never had a problem clicking the icon in the SysTray (next to the clock)....but first question...

Which OS are you running (Win 95/98, 2000, XP???)

Some versions of Norton had issues with 2K and XP (I believe Norton 2001 had issues with XP, but it has since been fixed/patched).

So- which OS and which version of Norton Utilities and AV?

You may have a virus. There was a virus going around a month or two ago that would attack NAV. I had it and it caused the same symptoms you're descibing. (inability to start Norton) I went to the symantec site when it happened and there was a warning about the virus and a download to get rid of it. Unfortunately I couldn't find it when I looked just now. I can't remember the name either. Sorry I'm not more help but maybe someone else has more information about it.

Okay, here's what I think I can figure out.

I have Windows Millenium Edition. I have NAV 2000 (or whatever... it's not supported any longer on the website :( ). I have Norton Utilities 2001, which I just installed.

Okay, I installed NU2001. I did the whole LiveUpdate thing. I downloaded the newest drivers from Gateway for my computer. I downloaded all the necessary updates from Microsoft (including a March update, which I can't understand why it didn't download when I did this a couple weeks ago). I ran all the corrections requested by NU2001. I ran NAV. It caught a virus, and deleted it completely. Yesterday, NAV stopped responding both to the Start/Program Files and the little box by the clock. I am, however, able to do virus scans by the right-click menu when I click on the C drive. But I don't get the splash screen, where all the info for the various Norton programs are listed.

I am not exactly computer literate. I use computer pidgin. :) I can do minor tasks, but this is beyond me.

I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling both NAV and NUtil. That got me able to access (at least for now) the control screen for NAV.

Of course, now I can't seem to get LiveUpdate to stop trying to update itself. I've now tried a half-dozen times, and followed the advice in the Knowledge Base, and I still can't get it to work. Oh well.... Probably not important.

Start->Run->regedit

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Post the things you find there here, you might be infected with a virus.

Example:
NAV Agent: "E:\PROGRAM\NORTON~1\NAVAPW32.EXE"
PWSTray: "PWSTRAY.exe"
...

Psionicist, I've made a bmp screen capture of the stuff you asked for, but don't know how to post it here. If you send an email (since yours isn't listed), I will send you a link to my Yahoo briefcase, where it's stored.

I don't think it's a virus. I think it's just Windows, and the fact that it's had about two years to accumulate all sorts of bugs. I usually dump computers after two to three years. :) (Of course, I can't afford to do that now, but oh well....)
