OT:Olympic Hockey: THE SWEDES ARE OUT!!!

I am absolutely shocked! I watched the whole thing and I couldn't believe my eyes!

Hold on to your hats, 'cause there's more to come. What a day for hockey!

You know, if it weren't for posts like this I would have no idea whatsoever about what is happening in the olympics. I scrupulously avoid TV news normally, and since NHL is on hiatus for the olympics, I don't even check out sports center or and sports web sites. The Wall Street Journal doesn't have a sports section, so there goes my newspaper.
Truthfully I just want it to be over so my hockey season can resume.

Buzzard

Wait until you see the final goal on the news:

At about 18:00 in the 3rd, a long shot from between the red and the blue line; It hit Mika Salo over the head and flipped in the net!

The guy who made the shot was heading toward his bench for a change of line when he realized he had scored!

Sweden bombarded the Belarus goaltender with 47 shots and Belarus got about half that, yet they hanged on like badgers and were extremely opportunistic. It was awesome.

I didn't see any of the game, so I'll take your word that it was a great match. But let me ask you (Todd and Mal) a question:

Are you giddy because Sweden got bounced and they beat Canada earlier in the tournament, or are you just genuinely thrilled to see the underdog pull an upset?

For my part, if the U.S. is gonna win the gold (and that's a HUGE if), I want them to beat the best competition.

I hope they get a medal!

And if it's gold, I'll still be retelling this story to my great grandchildren as they'll be watching the 2082 Olympics in Bangkok!

It could be the vengeance factor. After all, Salo's been on Canada's hit list since the 96 games. :)

Incidentally, I can't help but think that three of the greatest hockey games I've ever seen (other than the Stars winning the cup with Hull's foot in the crease:rolleyes: ) were in the Olympics: 1980 US vs. USSR, 1994 Canada vs. Sweden, and 1998 Canada vs. Czech Republic (the greatest goaltending duel of all time, IMHO).

I caught the end of the game; it was as good as the word claims. Now it's the Russians vs. the Czechs; this is also going to be a good game.
