OT: piratecats income generator

Incidentally, Kid Charlemagne, I've seen much worse schedules. The 8 hour one you listed (N = night shift, E = evening shift) -

M T W T F S S
-----------------
N N N - - E N

Is really odd from a production standpoint. Looks like a semi-fixed schedule, and not a great one. I'd be curious to see the schedule of the people who covered the nights you had off.

Actually, no one covered the nights I had off. I was working for a small video production company, and my job was to be the midnight shift/weekend guy - there was only the one shift on Saturday, 10am-6pm. No one else worked weekends unless a particularly important project came up.

At the very least, it explains why PC's villians are always working at peak efficiency. How many bad guys are cognizant of optimum sleep patterns for exacting pain and suffering on player characters? Not many, I'd imagine! :)

(P.S. I'll also remind Painfully, in the unlikely event Kid Char forgets.)

*Bump*

Since I'm still confused as to the actual recipient of e-mail me, plus I can't even PM you, PC, since I'm not a ... Community Supporter *sob* :(

I'm assuming that he's meaning you Kibbitz, since Piratecat is such a nice, helpfull guy. On the other hand, I might just be sticking my foot in my mouth.

My smart ass comment to this thread: You mean that companies actually CARE about worker health and stuff like that for night shift workers?

Oh, wait, it might just be for industries where there isn't an 80% turnover quarterly ;) (Yes, I worked on a manufacturing line over the summer since my intern oppurtunities fell through :p )

Firstly, I'm a paranoid, insecure person, so I need to make sure :D

Secondly, I can't e-mail him, since I'm not a Community Supporter. Not unless his e-mail is embedded somewhere about and around.

As for your smart-ass command, well, I know companies that don't :)

kibbitz — click the little "E-mail" button underneath one of his posts. That should bring up a page that pops up with his e-mail addy.

Best,

Thanks, but I think you missed what I mentioned earlier. Just to be specific this time around, should I click on that e-mail icon, I get this:

You do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

I'm guessing it's because I'm not a Community Supporter, someone correct me if I'm wrong here...

Oooo question

This is sort of auspicious.

Honestly I'm pretty curious about sleeping and productiveness. Its become a bit of a mini-obsession for me. If its not too much of an imposition I'd be curious about what you think of the following statements (this is all generally stuff I've culled from books and articles)

1. The body's sleep cycle is governed my some kind of hormone.

2. The hormone (or changes in hormone levels or different combinations of hormones) is most present the hour before you get up (to make sure you get a full nights sleep) and most lacking the hour before you go to sleep (to make sure you stay awake until its time to go to sleep.

This is why its good not to sleep in on the weekends you re-adjust your body clock and then you can't go to bed early on Sunday nights.

3. You also get a mini-increase in the afternoon (around 1ish?) which causes people to want to take a nap. I remember hearing a study about napping and increased productivey.
(I also find I'm tired around 5:30 - 6:30 right but that's probably a me thing)

4. the idea time for a nap is about 20 minutes. (AKA Disco napping)

5 Sleep is broken up into R.E.M. cycles (also called dreaming). Everybody puts in 2 R.E.M. cycles during the night, most people R.E.M for about an hour and a half. The problem with sleeping less than 7 or more than 8:30 hours is that the R.E.M. cycle doesn't complete fully. This pounds you mentally.

6. You need less sleep as you grow older. (does your REM cycle shorten? is it a hormonal thing)

Even more so than usual I'm unsure of my facts. Its hard to et good info on the topic.
How did you become a sleep schedualer anyway? Do you have a medical background?

Bonus question:
What do you think sleep does?
(I:ve heard everything from cooling down your brain temperature to processing the day's memories for correct archiving into long term memory to helping deal with emotional stressors -- and we all know what Lovecraft thought...)

Can you recommend any books?

Piratecat, you mentioned going to factories at 2am and such to keep people awake.

Haha, I simply cannot get this image out of my head of you showing up with a bag of stuff, ready to entertain the sleepy workers.

Worker: zzzzzZZZZzzz

Piratecat: Wake up! Look at me!!!! Check out my Jar Jar Binks impression!!
