Depending on the quality and thickness of the wood, that's not too bad a price. I've seen them for higher prices in catalogues and on websites, not to mention the outrageous prices they charge at the ren fests.

I want something very authentic looking, that I wouldn't be ashamed to show some people who came to my apartment.

Going around with stickball bats and broomsticks isn't my way to go about it.

I think I'll pay the $20.

A character dual-wielding baseball bats is a no-brainer for D20 Modern. Perhaps a "Slammin' Sammy" prestige class?

Of course, he'd probably go on strike for not getting 10x more xp than other party members...

I'm not positive, but I imagine you could get a pretty long and thick chunk of dowel rod at Home Depot or something. Maybe round off the cut ends a little with some sandpaper - heck, you could even use woodstain to make it look nice. True, it doesn't have metal tips. On the other hand you aren't paying $20 for a stick, and I think THAT'S something to be proud of when people come over to your apartment.

The thing that's good about a quarterstaff is the way it's cut from the tree (1/4 angle, hence the name, I believe). This makes the wood a lot stronger than any broomstick or something I could buy at Home Depot.
