OT- question concerning a contest I want to run

I want to run a contest relating to my story hour, but I have a few questions as to the legality.

The plan-
To have readers submit $1 each to join the contest, wagering on one outcome out of several random possibilities. Players that selected correctly will win the pot.

Now, I mean, I may be just completely pig-stupid, but this is illegal, right?

Well, your entering a whole lot of "it depends" territory here, but this is probably more headache than you wanna deal with. Almost all scenarios I can imagine resulting from this would probably be considered illegal.

Best bet would be to pool prizes, or get a sugar daddy to offer prize. I've got a copy of Darwins World I'm not using I could throw in the pot myself for ya...
