[OT] SF Bay Area Enworlders go see House Jacks

Sialia

First Post
Bandeeto got me tickets to see the House Jacks for my birthday!

Some of my regular gaming group might be joining us there(some Enworlders, some not), and (contact) might be joining us, too.

Are there any other Enworlders in the area who want to informally bump into us there? It'd be fun to see some of your faces.

Here's the details:

The House Jacks
Sat. Oct 5 Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse
1111 Addison Street, Berkeley, CA
info: (510) 548-1761
http://www.housejacks.com/hj2000/index2_gigs.html
(can preorder tickets online there, maps and directions also at that address)

Can't tell you how much, 'cause it's a birthday present, so I'm not peeking at the price tag. But the details are all there on the website.

Our tickets are for the 5:00 show.

They often sell out fast, so don't wait to long to decide.

What are the House Jacks, you say? Better go check out their website. You've been missing a treat.

I checked out their website and listened to the mp3s. They are really good. I see why you like them so much.

Have fun, wish I could be there.

This bump is a reminder to anyone who was thinking of joining us there--it's tomorrow night!

Send me an email at mscurio@yahoo.com if you want me to keep an eye out for you, or wear a rose in my lapel or something so you'll know who I am. Currently everybody who is joining us already knows my face, so I have no plans to wear "Sialia" across my forehead.

But I'd do it, if you wanted me to.

You know I would.

Oh wow was that a great concert!

You would not beleive.

(Apart from me being too chicken to go up on stage when they sang "Happy Birthday." I'm so embarassed.)

These guys are so good. Funny, charming, musically brilliant, lots of original music, and they really were having a good time up on stage.

Hours they spend getting together this really polished complicated and technically brilliant stuff, and most of what I recall this morning was their ad libbing and joking around with the audience.

In the second half, they offered to sing any song the audience named, provided it was something not in their repertoire that they had never rehearsed before.

(Kind of reminded me of The Flying Karamotsov Brothers, who volunteer to juggle anything the audience will provide.)

And it was clear they weren't faking the part about not knowing the songs--much of the time they didn't know the lyrics, or had to look round at each other for coaching--do you know how this part goes? Oh yeah, right, now I remember.

But their spontaneous versions of these things were better than most groups could put together after months of practice. Some of them were better than the originals.

I was particularly taken with their medley of "Blue Skies" and "Buffalo Soldiers." It was special.

And then we went out for really good and very cheap Pakistani food.

It was a perfect evening.

So, if you're really feeling blue that you missed this amazing chance to get together with us, next up in December: The Bobs are playing the Freight and Salvage, and we're gonna try to be there.

They don't have a percussionist who looks like Nolin, but we could talk about gaming after the concert, if we need an excuse to be talking about this here.

And I could tell you about the ratbastardest thing Piratecat, Bandeeto, and especially Kidcthulhu ever did to me, and how I wound up Engaged to be Married, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, with no idea where I was, and no one who would beleive the tale. Twice.

Trust me, it was all about The Bobs.
