[OT] Shuttle Disaster: On a lighter note...

PLEASE don't take this the wrong way. I haven't chimed in on the other thread because I feel I'll only go too far against some of the things being said there.

Suffice it to say, that I have the utmost respect for the pioneers of space travel and exploration and my heart goes out to all the families of all the victims of the disaster.

However, I am also a person who has, in recent years, striven to see the lighter side of life. Too many focus on the bad things in life when there is truly so much good in the world.

Like, for instance, humour.

If you feel that making a joke about NASA at a time like this is in bad taste, then please don't read any further as I have no wish to offend anybody.

This was posted by a dear friend of mine in NY who personally suffered through 9/11 (she still can't speak properly and has constant night terrors due to what she saw... she was IN one of the towers that morning...) so I can say without a doubt that it is meant to show the lighter side of life; as that is what she tries to do, always.

When NASA was preparing for the Apollo Project, it took the astronauts to a Navajo reservation in Arizona for training.

One day, a Navajo elder and his son saw the crew walking among the rocks. The elder, who spoke only Navajo, asked his son to translate a question for the NASA people: "What are these guys doing?"

One of the astronauts said that they were practicing for a trip to the moon. His son relayed the answer, and the elder got all excited, asking if the astronauts could possibly deliver his message to the moon.

Recognizing a promotional opportunity, a NASA official said, "Why certainly!" and told an underling to get a tape recorder.

The Navajo elder's comments into the microphone were brief. The son listened in and laughed uproariously. The NASA official asked the son if he would translate what his father had said, but he refused.

So, the NASA crew played the tape for the tribe at a nearby Navajo village. They too laughed loudly but refused to translate the elder's message to the moon.

Finally, a government translator was summoned. When he finally stopped laughing the translator relayed the message: "Watch out for these bastards. They have come to steal your land!"

Shuttle

My view is, people who can't take a joke seriously need to lighten up. It's human nature to make jokes in a period of tension - think about it.

Besides, these people knew what risk they were taking. Everything in risky these days - whenever you cross the street, you are accepting the possibility that you might get hit by a car. And to be honest, riding a tin can up on several tons of explosives, going into a place where air is only a dream, and falling 100 miles back to the ground is far riskier.

They died. So did the crew of Challenger. And if you consider how many shuttle flights have gone up without error, it's quite impressive that the casualties have been so few.

Yes, it's sad, but mourning won't bring those people back. :):):):) happens, get used to it.

LOLOLOL

I think i've heard it before, but it was funny this time as well. (RE Fourecks post, not the one right above me)

Remind me next time one of your loved ones dies to tell you that :):):):) happens and to get over it. Pathetic.

Reiduck, not only is swearing not permitted on the boards, you're showing remarkably bad judgment and taste. Please think before you post, huh?

Funny NASA story, by the way.

Bwah! Thanks, I needed that.

But...um...

My view is, people who can't take a joke seriously need to lighten up.

Jokes can be a vehicle for hostility, insults and all kinds of unpleasantness--that's what political satire is all about. Phrasing nastiness as a joke doesn't mean nobody is allowed to react to the underlying nastiness.
