In Isaac Asimov's book, The Gods Themselves there is a very relevant quote:
"Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain."
The Two Towers is the title of a book. I do not think there is any logical reason to change the move title. I doubt that the survivors of the WTC attack would want such a change if they knew of the petition. The petition to my mind trivializes the events of September 11, 2001 by trying to tie the title of a good book to a tragedy.
I am just glad that J.R.R. Tolkien did not live to see this absurd news story. I think people are mature enough to realize that the Two Towers does not in any way shape or form tie into the September 11th attacks. Indeed, were he alive Tolkien would have condemned the attacks as barbarous and evil.
