A mushroom hunter stumbled on 101 garden gnomes in a forest in southwest France, leaving police baffled yesterday.
The gnomes, standing 10-80cm high, were arranged in a circle, some of them on tree trunks, in the pine forest in Podensac, south of Bordeaux.
"It was very nice to look at, very tastefully done," a police spokesman said.
Police appealed for anyone who lost their figurines to come and identify them, if possible with photographs to prove ownership.
A shadowy organisation calling itself the Front for the Liberation of Gnomes warned last spring it would act on gnomes, the local newspaper Sud Ouest said yesterday. The group said it was waging "a mass campaign" against the "oppressors and enslavers" of garden gnomes.
It's a conspiracy I tell you. If they want, they breed like rabbits. Soon they'll be running the government!
