[OT] The Settlers of Catan

My friend suggested Settlers after my wife had felt left out of a game night (she doesn't roleplay). After a while, we liked the game so much that we bought the base set for ourselves. Soon it was the standard activity for any regular game night among our group.

After we got tired of playing Sequence time after time at my parents' house, my wife and I brought Settlers down to teach my mother and some of her friends. It took them about a half-hour to understand the game completely. Now my mother wins regularly, and when she doesn't, my wife does.

I'd enthusiastically recommend Settlers. It never gets old. We also have a DOS version of the game on our computer (with really, really, rat-bastardly nasty AI opponents). The computer version includes the Seafarers expansion, and it's great when you can't find anyone to play.

I haven't tried Cities and Knights yet.

I've never heard of a computer version. I'll have to check eBay to see if it's available somewhere...

there are some PC versions out here (most notably some online ones), and Capcom is actually making a version for the PS2, due out this fall I believe.

Hmm... finally, the last straw that will convince my wife to buy a PS2 for me ^H^H us. Thanks for the tips.

Be sure to check out the latest issue (#70) of Knights of the Dinner Table! Aside from bumping up the page count to 100 pages, there's a great strip where the Knights play "Settlers." (We all love the game, too.) It should be hitting stores soon, and will definitely be at our booth at GenCon!
