[OT] The Worst Car of the Millennium - The List

Last three decades of the millennium maybe.

Where's the Edsel from the 1950s?

It's on the "Cars that have a bad rap without actually having anything wrong with them" list. There were three models of Edsel, the Ranger, the Pacer* and a third model I forget. They were produced from 1957 to 1959, and were a commercial failure. When the Edsel came out, the nation was in a recession and big cars with chrome were out. People wanted smaller cars, not a behemoth like the Edsels.

Besides which, the list is populated with cars would actually be driving on the road, or have driven in the last thirty years. When's the last time you saw an Edsel on the highway? Me, I hate the Mazda GLC, based on experience. That was bad enough. My wife had one or two of those, once, though.

* - Edit: Not to be confused with the GMC Pacer, the fishbowl-that-drives-like-a-fishbowl. How that avoided the list, I'll never know.

No, I haven't owned any of them.

But my dad did have a Chevette up until last year. He bought it from his Aunt who was the original owner of it. It wasn't a bad car really. Just incredibly small. He was able to drive it from South Jersey to Dallas, Texas with no problems at all.

Thank you for the link. I haven't laughed that hard in at least a month. :D

Never owned any of them - All I've ever owned are Pontiac Grand Am's, Grand Prix's, and a Hyundai. Of them all, the worst one was a 93 Grand Prix.

THE %&^*ING ENGINE FELL OUT OF IT WHILE DOING 70 mph ON THE INTERSTATE. IN THE PASSING LANE.

Luckily no one was hurt, and I learned to laugh about it later. :)

Okay, I did have a Cimarron, but it was okay. I mean, it was piece of junk, but it was a piece of junk bought at an auction for $800, and it ran for a year. So I didn't mind it. Now, it had a few unconventional features that you don't find on a standard Cimarron. For one, the windows were all sealed up. I mean that not only did they not go down, they were actually sealed with aquarium sealant. There was no air conditioning, either. So, yes, the thing got DAMN HOT inside. The windshield wipers had to be jury-rigged, set up to be always on. I had to pull and replace the fuse for it while driving.

ask Ralph Nader here is the worst car of the last millienium:

I have also had 4 cars on the list.

#6 LeCar - I had a green LeCar back in high school. I loved this car. It did not have too much pep, but I swear it would switch gears in reverse. It was as easy to drive backwards as forwards. It met its end in a parking lot after a big snow.

#4 Gremlin - I loved this car. Don't get me wrong, it was a complete piece of crap, but everyone in HS wanted to look at it. This car lost many parts off of the bottom chasis of the car while jumping repeatedly over the top of a particular hill. It was fun while it lasted.

#5 Chevette - My first car in college. I bought it very cheap and I am glad because the gas tank rusted out and I kept breaking the back window glass. I did not replace the rotten tank.

#1 Yugo - While I did not buy the Yugo or technically own it, it was a company car I had for a part time summer job. The owner of the company bought 10 of them for $800 ea and gave all of his drivers a car. Nothing fun about a Yugo.

My family owned a Chevy Vega for something like 15 years. For a lot of that, there was a mechanic in the family, and he kept in running well. Actually, it was tweaked somewhat, so it ran really well. When I was a kid, my mom would embarass guys in Corvettes & Porsches by beating them off the line. ;)

Of course, the car still rusted...

It wasn't until there was no mechanic and not enough money to keep it up that it went downhill. Then it turned into junk, which is what it ended up being sold as.

Most models of cars occasionally have lemons -- a single example that just doesn't work, and isn't indicative of the entire line. Our Vega seemed to be the opposite. :D
