Tell me socialism does not have at least a few benefits:)

I would but that would be politics. :D

Labor day is traditionally a day for picnics and such. It is really almost an end of summer holiday anymore IMO and has little real meaning to us non-union types.

Thanks Vax - much appreciated. It is not one of the US holidays that I'd heard of before.

KnowTheToe - is your 2 weeks vacation a year quite a common thing? In the UK even the lowliest new starters normally get 4 weeks holiday, and most people expect to get more than that after a few years! I don't think anyone here would take a job that gave so little holiday (and my european friends think that the British are stingy with their holidays!!)

From what I understand, some European governments require businesses to provide a certain amount of vacation time (France and Italy come to mind, but I may be mistaken). I am unaware if Britian has a similar deal.

The US has no such requirement of business- so the amount of time you get depends on the vocation you enter and your position in it.

I get about three weeks (not counting holidays), but I rarely use any for anything outside of consulting.

2 Weeks vacation is generally the best you can hope for when you start working 9 to 5. Those of us who know about the sick/wonderful vacation system you Europeans get are quite jealous. :)

We have Labour Day in Canada too. It also marks the last day before children go back to school, giving them a long weekend with their folks, which I think is a nice thing. It's a big party that's become more the celebration of the end of summer. One last big hurrah before life returns to normal and the good weather leaves.

Plane Sailing -

2 weeks a year vacation is the American standard for vacations - make of it what you will. At my job, if I've been working for 5 years, I get 3 weeks a year, and if I've been working for 10 years, I get 4 weeks.

Even then, we are expected to take these breaks at certain times of the year, unless arrangements are made, and only when we get that precious third week, may we take it any time.

Two weeks is pretty much standard for any full-time position.

After 5 years or so most companies jump you up to 3 weeks, and so on from there.

I have colleagues in my office from the UK, believe me, I give them no amount of sh-- about their luxurious month-long holidays. (Lazy limeys!)

As for the holiday itself, I concur: To me it's always just been the "end of summer" holiday. It's the other half of the summer bookend, with Memorial Day kicking it off in the spring. Lots of summer establishments (amusement parks, swimming pools, etc.) run from holiday to holiday. As a kid, you could not drag me away from the pool on the last day of summer: Labor Day.

That is because you are heathens and infidels! Know that you shall one day feel the wrath of the Dollar, and the day of reckoning shall be upon us! Those who side with the Dollar shall join it in Heaven for eternity, where they will for eternity enjoy the Holy Day of Enron as CEOs and Directors. Those who side with Socialism shall be eternally cursed unknown but surely present evils!

"In the beginning there was the Dollar, and the Dollar was good..."

Err, speak for yourself. ;)

I know enough to not want such a system.

Call my crazy, but I'd rather 4 or more weeks of holiday a year than 2 or none, thankyouverymuch. ;)
