[OT]What's there to do in Amsterdam, NY?

Just curious. I'm going to be spending a week there with my fianceé. Just looking for some peace and quiet, but I know there will be at least one day/night that we'll want to get out and do something we can't in NYC.

Any suggestions are helpful.

Amsterdam, NY is about about an hour (maybe less) from Saratoga Springs, NY.

If you are going to be there in August, hit the race track in Saratoga. If you are not going to be there in August, go to Saratoga anyway.

Eat at the Olde Bryan Inn (I highly recommend the New Orleans pasta, but it's spicy).

While you are in Saratoga, go hit the bars, it's a large town, about 50,000 people...with about 70 bars, heh.

You won't be too far from albany. Hit CrossGates its in the top 10 biggest malls in the US.

Thier is a Gaming Store but I don't recommend it. Its a pain to get to and the owner doesn't favor gamers.

Um, outside of that hit a bar becuase there isn't much else to do, Welcome to upstate NY.

Hey, there's plenty to do if you're near one of the big four cities (that's Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo). You just have to actually LOOK for stuff to do instead of letting it fall into your lap.

Active versus passive entertainment :P

Well, sure there is plenty to do. You can go for a walk, you can talk to all the interesting people, you can go mini golfing. But, there isn't anything that really stands out. If you have a few hours you could drive to Syracuse or Boston or NorthHampton Mass.

My point being there are things to do but nothing that you couldn't do in NYC or any other city.

The one thing that definitely comes to mind is shooting ranges (practically no way to find one in NYC, what with the gun laws) but that's not necessarily everyone's preferred entertainment...

I agree. Olde Bryan Inn is very good.

Another good place to eat is Aromi d'Italia in Albany. Their gellato is as good as it is in Italy and Greece. Reasonably priced, too. (okay, enough sounding like an ad for them).

If you do like hiking, there are several nice, scentic places around here, like Thatcher Park up by Knox, NY.

There's a nice Gaming Store in Syracuse called Altered States. Also in Syracuse is Carousel Mall (nice big mall strategically built on a toxic waste dump).
