If you come to the San Francisco bay area, in northern California, swing by the Napa Valley. The premiere wine-making area of the U.S. (and has beaten the French in several competitions).

Remember. Napa makes wines. Sonoma makes scenic attractions. :)

There's also a nice, big lake up that ways too, called Clear Lake. Great fishing, and it beautiful up in that area, too.

I assume that by "Cahokia" people are referring to the Cahokia Mounds. There's a town (that I live in) named Cahokia that isn't really a part of the mounds, though it has it's own history. We have a couple of old colonial and early American buildings in town. Plus there's talk of putting a big aerospace park in town, but that's in the future. Other than that, the town's not impressive.

Heck, I forgot more stuff for Chicago. During the summer on tuesday nights Grant park films classic movies. We went out to see 'Dr Strangelove' this year. Heres a link about it: http://www.suntimes.com/special_sections/outdoorfilm/

Heck of alot of fun to see. Also, if you are not gonna be here around Gencon, midsummer the city clears Lake Shore Drive one day in the morning for a few hours. 7am to 12 I think. The whole lakeside expressway is open just for pedestrians and bikers. The view is beautifull allong the lakefront, especially in the morning as you see the sunrise. Heres the site: http://www.chibikefed.org/bikethedrive/home.html

One site in Arizona no one has mentioned, and it is fairly close to the Grand Canyon, is the Metorite Crater. I would suggest driving from El Paso through New Mexico, including Roswell, then across eastern Arizona to the Metorite Crater and then to the Grand Canyon.

Except it now costs way more than it was worth. I seem to recall disneyland was cheaper than the crater!

Since you plan on driving, here is a suggestion. Plan your car trip way in advance so you will have some idea on what states you will be spending the night. Then, when you cross the boarder, visit the states Visitor Center (the first rest area you should come too right after the state line). The reason I suggest this is because most visitors centers contain discount mags (newsmags) that are nothing but giant coupon books of all the motels in the state. You will save at least a few dollars using these coupons. And since you are visiting the USA for a month, thats quite a bit of cash when you add it up in the end.
