[OT] World War II Online

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp I was thinking of playing this online game when it was first launched several months ago, but then decided to wait a bit. From all accounts, it seems like the game's launch was horrendous, but that it's pretty playable now (although from what I've heard, the graphics still aren't as good as similiar single-player games like Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein).

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Is anyone here familiar with World War II Online, and if so, is it now worth giving a try?

Have not played it, however, it's generaly unwise to compare MMORPG graphics to FPS graphics. FPS games are graphic showcase engines, but MMORPG engines actualy have to do a lot more. Look at Anarchy Online... best graphics of any MMORPG to date, but it's graphics still don't quite compare to most FPS games... and its a system-killer to boot, that manages to choke up my 1.2ghz/512/GeForce3, and that's not even on max detail levels.

As long as you're talking about enourmous system requirements, the latest expansion pack to Everquest nad an outraegous memory requirement - something like 512MB minimum, recommended more.

Well, it's sorta a misnomer... I ran it fine with 256 ram (I later upgraded)... it's slower, but it runs fine.

I've been a player since it came out and it's come a _long_ way from a terrible start. To be fair, it still has a long way to go but its come a long way since that terrible start.

It's true that it takes a lot of computer, though less so if you don't want to fly a plane than if you do. People do ok with 600mhz-256mb computers on the ground. I'm playing fine with a 800mhz-512mb system, though I did have to upgrade my videocard. Tweaking your system can help a lot. Here's a good site for that: http://avondell.com/ww2ol/main.html

The graphics aren't as good as single player or non-mmo multiplayer games, but they look decent and do the job. According to the official boards, they've added multisource lighting to their graphics engine and will start including that. They also seem to be considering dropping win-95 support so they can take advantage of a lot of performance updates in DX8 to allow better graphics. Finally, there's a major update coming in a couple of months with a completely overhauled UI that's supposed to look really slick.

I don't play as much as I used to due mostly to burnout, but it's a fun game. Fortunatly, you don't have to take my word for it. They've got a free 14 day trial available for download. Look for a link on their front page: http://www.wwiionline.com

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Thanks for the advice, everyone! :)

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp And don't worry, I wasn't looking (or expecting) for the game to have graphics as good or better than those other games - just as long as the graphics are decent. The news of a completely overhauled UI coming in a few months is definitely encouraging, though.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp I think I'll try the game out since, like MaxKaladin mentioned, they're giving a free 14-day trial... and that's in addition to the "first month free" offer they've already been offering!
