It's all a highly elaborate scam!
Gary Gygax is behind it all, because Gygax is a very clever man who plans ahead for contingencies and knows how to politically maneuver very well.
When Gary quit from TSR, he already had plans to regain it. He developed a company called *gasp* Wizards of the Coast, disguising himself as a certain CEO named Peter Adkison. He developed Magic the Gathering in order to make a fortune, because Gary knows what the customers want.
After making millions of dollars, Gary waited till TSR was in a delicate position. Gary knew Lorraine Williams would screw up and destroy the company financially. When the time came, he bought our TSR and set out to create a new edition of the D&D game, an edition more akin to 1e and OD&D, and less like the second edition he had come to hate. Making up various names (Skip Williams, Monte Cook, Jonathan Tweet, Sean K. Reynolds, etc.) he made third edition, while at the same time completely changing his style of writing.
Third Edition has proved very well, and when the time came, Gary bought out Hasbro (not the other way around) for use in his schemes of the future. After posing as all the employees you have all come to love, he "laid off" these celebrities of the gaming industry after he had convinced you all they had existed.
The OGL is also a scam, because Gary owns every third party company in the market. Gary knows what sells. But how? Gary Gygax has the markest research power of a wealthy corporation with his combined business might.
Gary has the writing prowess akin to Isaac Asimov. The man can write products faster then you can blink an eye. Money comes in from the market to him and him only, to fund his overtaking of the small underdog publishers that still exist. Once he owns them all, he will become the Bill Gates of the RPG industry.
How did he manage to set this all up? Well, it comes down to a simple explanation:
Gary Gygax is a greater god!
