I'm there.

I'm wondering this: Is there going to be some form of predetermining plotline, or characters? Because it springs to mind that one writer might well kill off a character another writer would like alive.

Now, please, don't take this as criticism or as hijacking your idea, but:

I've been toying around with an idea inspired by the Star Wars: Infinities comics. The idea is this... a small event changes in the Star Wars universe (in the comics case, a turbo laser hits a certain ship) and everything spins in a different direction. Everything changes (Leia goes DarkSide for example).

Rather than leaping into what might, without a great deal of planning, quickly run dry. So... here is what I propose (just slap me down if this isn't the sort of thing you're looking for):

One writer comes up with an introduction that leads the heroes (they can be created with all our input, here) to a certain point, or even through an encounter. Now... each writer who wants to participate can write their own version of the encounter but change something at a certain point - maybe that mage did die, or the fighter fell off the cliff, or the kobold made his reflex save (and infinity other possibilities) and the knock on effect that that would have on the rest of the encounter. THEN, we vote on the best spin off thread and follow that through (the writer of the winning thread writes out the next installment and the process is repeated). Voila. Story. And its progress is voted for by all of us.

But then again. Thats just an idea. Maybe I haven't explained properly (the idea is flow of consciousness at the moment), but its worth thinking about - it might be a better structure than a simple pass-the-story style. But then again I might be wrong.

Feel free to tell me to shut up.

Spider.

OK, add NoOneofConsequence and Spidey to the list.

This is really beginning to shape up pretty well!

Spider_Jeruselam:
That sounds like one heck of an idea, and I'd love to try it, but I've been thinking that that might be a better exercise for when we - as writers - have gotten a better feel for each other. Initially, I was figuring that we would come up with 1, 2, or 3 main characters that we would then follow - supporting players could come and go, but we would need to keep the main character(s) alive for at least one or two rotations.

Also, and this idea was brought up by another possible participant (dshai527), we might want to try a story that follows an object, much like the movie "The Gun." This one might be a bit easier to do, as everyone would have complete control over their characters, and would simply have to keep an object intact to pass to another person/place/thing.

Depending on the amount of people we have doing this, I'd like to try doing both on a staggered rotation. But that depends entirely on the amount of people we get to climb aboard.

In the meantime, feel free to suggest variations to your heart's content!

This sounds like fun. And I really like the idea about the object passed from story to story, so the characters can change as the writers do. There was another movie in which this was done with a $20 bill. Count me in.

I hope I’m not to late, but count me in. I don’t know if the voting thing would work as it would then turn into more of a competition than something that’s a group effort. Not that this is a bad thing, I just think it was worth pointing out. How ever it turns out when the rules are hammered, I’d love to be involved though. I love doing stuff like this.

Okay then. Going with the item as the story focal point:

The item could either be sentient or maybe sought after by a certain persons. This would give the characters that this item falls into a definite enemy (although of course add in whatever else you want) - this would add another grounding factor in the story.

Ie: Helmet of non-detection with some other undisclosed powers is being pursued relentlessly by some shades or something. Sounds a bit like Lord of the Rings. Which is similar to item-is-the-story type thing. Hmmm... I have no original ideas. :D

The chain writing is a superb idea, by the way. If it works, it will be fantastic (and could run indefinitely).

How many have we got participating so far?

OK, the list so far...

Son of Thunder
darklight
dshai527
GWolf
NoOneofConsequence
Spider_Jeruselam
NiTessine
Shadowdancer
eXodus
Daniel Knight

and myself, of course.

That makes 11. With that many people, my suggestion is that we have 2 or 3 stories in rotation the same time (staggered, of course). With 3 to 4 days between posts (or a week at most) , that would give everyone a something to write on a story every 2 to 3 weeks.

This assumes that we will cap out at about a dozen writers total.

I'm going to keep this thread going until Friday, at which point we'll begin firming up the final list of participants and deciding exactly what kind of stories we'll be passing around.

If you know anyone else who might be interested, let me know!

Awesome!!!

Hoody Hoo Boys and Girls!!!

Excitment is in the air. A few suggestions. Let's critique each others writing but lets not get rude, many of us don't write professionally. If one of the stories is more character driven, let's keep the main character(s) alive for awhile. Although one of my favorite stories was "The Best" by Margaret Weis. Without spoiling it for those who haven't read it it's in Dragon #200 and one of those Dragonlance Anthologies. Very good story, a recommended read.

The time limit sounds good Enkhidu. It should be enough time without extenuating circumstances.

Looking forward to writing with yous guys,

Son of Thunder
