Our group's battle mat idea

We see all those expensive, fancy battlemats for sale. We actually have an old one and use it all the time. The problem is, it's an old hex pad. Though we've gotten used to drawing square rooms on a hex mat, we finally decided to go for squares.

What we're going to do is buy one of those cheap plastic tablecloths with red-and-white checkers in approximately 1 inch squares. Our wet-erase markers should work fine on this, and the entire table can be a battlemat if need be!

There is at least one person here that does that. I can't remember who, but he has taken many pictures of his game, he uses buildings, trees etc and has everything on the tablecloth.

My cheap battle mat is the square grid that came in the D&D boxed game, you should be able to find some use real cheap. Then I took it and got it lamentaed. All in all about 5$, plus I got a lot of cool chits from the box thingy.
