Outside of the WoTC D&D minis...

...which other companies make miniatures that closely resemble the various monsters found in the D&D game (in other words, a Troll that looks like a D&D troll, a Carrion Crawler, an Owlbear, an Umber Hulk, and the like) ?

If said figures / company exists, how well do they mesh with the pre-painted D&D minis ?

I ask because some of the eBay prices for 'rare' monster types from the early mini sets are outrageous, and I would like to be able to buy some alternative minis without breaking the bank.

Thanks for your time.

I used to buy piles of Reaper minis b/c they basically make D&D monsters and just name them differently. The problem? Too bloody expensive. The prices kept going up, then their site got hacked, then the prices went up some more, and now I just buy the plastic DDMs. Much more economical, much less weight, and no hassles with painting.

But if it's metal you want to buy, I'd recommend Reaper (except for the price).

Thanks for the responses.

Orgrok, I am buying the D&D minis, but there are some rares from the initial sets that I want, and they are WAY overpriced on eBay.

Unfortunately, this is the kind of 'issue' I saw becoming a problem when WotC decided to go with the collectible format, and it has. I'd like to find an alternative to some of the harder to find D&D minis.

Thanks again.

Can you name a few more harder-to-find minis? It may help narrow it down.

The Troll Slasher from Angelfire was a pretty good DDM mini for the Troll, and uncommon as well.

Does anyone do Carrion Crawlers?

Cheers!

Grendel has Dungeon Crawlers. Discount Hobby was a great site to browse because they organized their miniatures by class including monsters (seen here). Unfortunately, they seem to have cut out most of their lines. While the listing is still there, most of the links are dead.

Of course, Reapers Fantasy Fig Finder is your friend for anything Reaper produces or even used to produce (so you can track it down in the secondary channels).

Thanks folks....and Merric, thanks for the suggestion on that Troll.

To answer your question: I was looking at the Umber Hulk, the Wraith, the Troll, and the Owl Bear on eBay, and realized I wasn't going to be able to fork over the $200 or so it would cost me to acquire them in the numbers I would like to have them in for various in-game scenarios.

Unfortunately, I haven't kept up with the sets, or purchased cases or anything like that (I haven't been a fan of minis in D&D to this point), so I don't have a lot of the 'core' minis that need to be thrown out for any respectable D&D game.

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me to see some of those return in a future DDM set. The early D&D minis look pathetic when put next to the newer sets.

The only problem with all of the other minis mentioned above is that they come unfinished (unpainted, unassembled). So, if you're like me and have no talent or patience for assembling/painting minis, then they will be of no use to you.

Reaper has quite the variety of wraiths available. I like them. Male, female, armored, "ringwraith"...quite a few.
