Outsiders and Martial Weapons

RogueJK

It's not "Rouge"... That's makeup.
The Monster Manual errata states:
"Outsiders with Intelligence scores of 6 or higher also are proficient with all martial weapons."

Would you gain these proficiencies if you become an Outsider through a Prestige Class, such as the Divine Disciple or Alienist?

My first instinct is to say no, but I'd like to hear what others think before making a final decision.

Hmmm.. A very interesting question, I would say it doesn't really matter. In general a martial weapon does only slightly more damage than a simple weapon and by the time you become an outsider in a prestige class you're not going to be using your weapons very much anyway. Because your spells are so much more effective.

But obviously not giving them those weapons does make a certain amount of sense as well since they were not born as an outsider.

I'd say no, it doesn't make sense that they are gaining training becuase they physical self evolved into a diffferent form. But then again the new wildshape grants the feats of the new form, so a shifter who could turn into a an outsider can turn into one and gain all martial weapon proficiencies, so maybe they should gain it.

I SAY NO

One has to be inherently an Outsider (born and bred) with the appropriate Int score to be proficient in martial weapons.

Your Campaign, Your Rules.

Here's a related question: If a PC becomes an Outsider through a PrC does he also gain Darvision and Low-Light vision?

IIRC, the Sage or one of the designers has said yes. But those are physical abilities, as opposed to the social or mental ability of being proficient with all Martial Weapons.

I'd say no. Proficiencies are something that require training and are not inherent, so I wouldn't allow it to be automatically acquired. Just like if a dead non-dwarf PC was reincarnated as a dwarf, he'd gain the racial Con benefit and the saving throws vs. poison and spells, but not the dodge bonus vs. giants or stonecunning.

No. You don't gain an Outsider's normal feats, either - so why should you gain his Weapon Proficiencies (which are feats, too)? :)
