Is it possible to add any undead templates to Outsiders?

Can you have a Ghost Planetar? It doesn't include Outsiders in the list of creatures that it can be added to so my guess is no. However, Monte Cook mentioned undead gods in his new book "Requiem for a God" (Which is extremely good by the way).

Imagine an evil Planetar undead (of some sort), whose life force is contained in an object held by a demon lord who captured the Planetar and did horrible unimaginable things to him before making him an undead. The Planetar now serves the demon lord because the he holds the Planetar’s life force. I could just imagine the horror that would be this creature, his wings tattered and bloody remnants of what they were, his once beautiful emerald skin now rotting in spots and the bones of his face showing through. The aura of corruption would be as intense as his once powerful aura of protection. He would be completely horrifying to my group as they have met several living Planetar’s in the past and have a great respect for the creatures. To have to fight and destroy this corruption would move them I think…

What do you think?

What type of Undead Template should I use? Lich, Vampire, or Ghost just doesn’t seem to fit. Ghost would maybe work but would make the Planetar way too powerful and my APL 16 party would be destroyed by it.

I appreciate your help!

By the rules, no you most likely couldn't have an Undead Outsider (at least not with the templates available in the MM.)

Of course, as any good DM knows, "Damn the rules man! Full speed ahead!"

Seriously, I am always for ignoring little things like this in order to get a really cool idea.

Most of the templates in the MM are going to make a Planetar REALLY powerful. Check the Wizards site (sorry, I don't have a link.) for the Skeleton and possibly the Zombie template. Those might be a little less powerful.

Failing that, perhaps just giving the Planetar a Black Guard level and just role playing it as being evil or something along those lines.

The actual game description of something is not strictly limited to the behind the screens mechanics. On these boards once, someone suggested using a Sea Hag but playing it as a Twisted Dryad. Sounded like a good idea to me.

Maybe there is some monster that is about the level you want. Just call it a Rotting Planetar and freak your players out. Works great. :D

Well, good luck either way!

I suggest to add the undead traits and twist the celestial and spell-like abilities, without changing any other characteristic (BAB or base saves)

Someone! That's a thing of beauty!

I especially like your Spell Like ability selections, basically the opposite of what it had when it was good...

Excellent!
